Neutron scattering enables new science across a broad range of disciplines, and for this reason it is undergoing major expansion in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. Various diffactometers and spectrometers have recently been built at ANSTO, but an instrumental option for a high-throughput cross-discipline spectroscopy is urgently needed. Fortunately, it is fairly straightforward to add this type of option to an existing spectrometer that will broaden its user-base from specialised applications in physics to more general applications in physics, chemistry, materials-science and biology. This additional option provides a totally new way for Australian scientists to study atomic and molecular motions. Read moreRead less

Optical floating-zone furnaces are powerful and efficient tools for the discovery and characterisation of new materials. They are widely used in the solid-state chemistry, condensed-matter physics, materials science, and engineering communities. This optical floating-zone furnace, the first in Australia, will support and encourage the growing number of local researchers in these fields. It will allow them to take much better advantage of the new research reactor and synchrotron being constructed in Australia by maximising their ability to grow crystals of technologically and scientifically important materials, particularly electronic and magnetic materials, for fundamental and applied research at those facilities.Read moreRead less

Self-assembly leads the formation of patterns without external directing agents. It is responsible for the growth of complex multiscale structures found in biology and materials science and is a crucial concept for development of viable nanotechnologies. Complex systems, from biological ecosystems to financial markets and the Internet, are also characterized by spontaneous clustering and linkages that determine their collective behaviour. The project will investigate in detail the geometry, topology, materials science and statistical physics of networks, leading to design and characterization of robust self-assembled materials and complex systems.Read moreRead less
Polymer Globules: Beyond the Homopolymer Model. Polymers are long chainlike molecules which play a crucial role in many aspects of our lives. As plastics they represent the most versatile and ubiquitous of man-made materials. Moreover, all living things depend on polymers for the structure of their cells and for the inheritance and function through DNA and proteins. Despite their importance our understanding of polymers is rather limited. The research funded by this proposal will enable us to understand more complicated kinds of polymers. This will help uncover some fascinating physics and in the long term develop new materials and promote new advances in biology. Read moreRead less
Macromolecular Condensates: From Globules to Toroids and Beyond. Polymers are long-chain molecules which are vital for all living things. Examples include proteins and DNA which carries all of the information needed for life. In the cell and in the laboratory these polymers are often found in a compact folded state. Current polymer science is good at describing very flexible polymers, but fails to describe most biological polymers which have backbones that are difficult to bend. Control of material structure, from the atomic and molecular scales and upward will be a central focus, to engineer specific features from electronic or photonic functionality, to chemical selectivity. The manufacturing principle of biological materials, made routinely in vivo with exquisite economy and control at all length scales, will be adopted for materials design. The route to these materials is self-assembly. We will explore in detail theory and practical manufacture of self-assembled nanostructured materials, building molecular honeycombs combining composite material features at the nanoscale.Read moreRead less

The aim of this proposal is to establish a state-of-the-art Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) facility in the Melbourne region. ESEMs have considerable advantages over conventional instruments in that they allow imaging and analysis to be performed in gaseous or high pressure environments. This enables electron microscopy to be used for the detailed analysis of insulating, wet or out-gassing specimens in their natural state as well as the investigation, in real time, of dynamical processes such as crystallisation and corrosion. The new facility will support a wide range of multi-disciplinary research programs from four Universities and three CSIRO divisions.Read moreRead less

We propose a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of single polymer chains, exploring how their shape or conformation, and stretching characteristics are affected by specific molecular interactions. Our tools in this study are both experimental and theoretical: optical tweezers, atomic force microscopy, as well as new theories in colloid science, and computer simulation. In particular, we will examine the effect of different salts and sugars upon the properties of polymers such as DNA, and how monomer sequence can lead to dramatically different structures in solution which in turn will lead to novel materials.Read moreRead less

This project studies the force between two nearby colloidal particles or macromolecules in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Although such forces control the approach and binding of particles in electrolytes and hence have large practical significance they are poorly known. In recent work I established a rigorous scheme for calculation of the electrostatic contribution to the force and proved its feasibility. In order to realise practical applications, such as in drug design, we must know the mean force between an ion and a surface or functional surface group. Here I propose to perform the required simulations and explore the analytical simplifications.Read moreRead less
