The project will deepen our understanding of the debilitating political crisis that has wracked that country since 2005, at a time of growin ....Thailand's social and political transformation, 1880-1980. This project aims to benefit policy-makers, diplomats, and business people who manage Australia's deepening relations with the Asian region by presenting a new understanding of the complex nature of rules of social behaviour in Thailand, an economically and strategically key mid-level Asian country. The project will deepen our understanding of the debilitating political crisis that has wracked that country since 2005, at a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty in the East Asian region. The project will examine the vast literature on the bodily practices, modes of speech, and mental discipline known as Thai manners. Summary
A world of its own: earliest human occupation of the Maros karsts in Southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia. Excavations at Leang Burung 2, a rockshelter on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, yielded evidence for the initial arrival of modern humans and underlying deposits containing primitive stone tools from earlier inhabitants. This project aims to recover further evidence of early modern humans at the site and the identity of the earlier tool-makers.

The Rise of sophisticated authoritarianism in Southeast Asia. This project aims to investigate the persistence of authoritarian rule in Southeast Asia. Against the backdrop of a global democratic recession, the project seeks to identify how dictators and dominant parties have learnt to maintain power using increasingly sophisticated techniques. Using five original case studies and three qualitative methods, the expected outcome is an explanation for the survival of authoritarian regimes that is ....The Rise of sophisticated authoritarianism in Southeast Asia. Early art, culture and occupation along the northern route to Australia. This project aims to uncover archaeological evidence for early humans in Indonesia's northern island chain (from Borneo to West Papua). This poorly known region harbours the world's earliest known figurative cave art (>45,500 years old), and it is also the most likely maritime route used by modern humans during the initial peopling of Australia ~65,000 years ago. The project aims to use cave excavations and rock art dating ....Early art, culture and occupation along the northern route to Australia.
