climate forecasting. We will develop new methodology for accurate modelling of the important and dominant slow global processes without explicitly resolving the precise detail of the weather of each day at all scales. Using sophisticated mathematics, this project investigates how to parameterize the fast and small processes by using stochastic processes in a controllable and adaptive way.Read moreRead less

This research will address an important issue of national interest - the causes of the extinction of the Australian megafauna. By furthering research on the causes of this historic event, valuable insights will be gained into possible causes of current extinction events and the future impact of climate change. It will bring to Australia new technologies and methods developed overseas by an Australian researcher, and put Australia at the forefront of several areas of research including 3D scanning and analysis. This project will form part of an international collaboration called the MorphoBrowser, an exciting advance in the study of biological diversity. This will help maintain Australia as a pre-eminent country for palaeontology research.Read moreRead less

This application seeks to exploit our established lead in the measurement of diffuse scattering from disordered materials and its analysis using large-scale computer simulations. Many industrially important materials such as ceramics, superconductors, catalysts, electro-optical materials and minerals owe their special properties to the disorder in their structure. This disorder causes diffuse X-ray scattering which can be probed using synchrotron X-rays and powerful computers to reveal details about the material's nanoscale structure. The new methodology being developed will enhance our detailed understanding of the relationships between structure and properties in materials and help promote the design of new materials. Ongoing changes in the Earth's atmosphere, such as ozone depletion, demonstrate the need to understand the processes that control atmospheric chemistry. The proposed research will improve the fidelity of photochemical models, provide additional insight into the recent evolution of the Venus atmosphere, and examine how atmospheric chemistry and climate change interact(ed) on Venus. This research will improve our understanding of long-standing issues, such as how much water might have been present on Venus in the recent past. The research program will provide an opportunity for Australian science to participate in at least one spacecraft mission to Venus. Read moreRead less

The availability of powerful computing equipment has had a dramatic impact on statistical methods and thinking. It has motivated development of novel approaches to data analysis, whose conception
and appreciation, even their application, often demand sophisticated and complex theoretical methods. In this context, the project will develop new approaches to solving non-standard statistical problems. These techniques will either have direct application to solving practical problems of national or community concern, or provide a better understanding of the nature of such problems.Read moreRead less

This project addresses the early evolution of our Solar System that is one of the most important questions in Earth and Planetary sciences. It will use Australia's meteorites and innovative analytical techniques developed in Australia. High impact scientific results produced in this project will be to the national benefit in terms of international recognition of our unique capability in this high profile and competitive research field. Furthermore, by providing new constraints on the initial state of geochemical evolution of the terrestrial planets, this work will further our knowledge of the subsequent evolution of the Earth's mantle and crust, leading to better models for Australian continent development and its deep-Earth resources.Read moreRead less

Understanding the transformation kinetics of iron and copper species is critical to maintaining Australia's water resources since i) iron transformations are key to generation and transport of acid in Australia's coastal environment; ii) growth of toxic algae are stimulated by dissolution of iron-rich sediments with subsequent release of nutrients phosphorus and iron, and iii) algal toxicity is related to iron and copper nutrition and interplay of these metals with oxygen. Additionally, global cycles of carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen are influenced by iron and copper interactions with light and oxygen. Improved understanding of these processes should lead to an awareness of how to prevent these problems and, if they occur, approaches to their mitigation.Read moreRead less
The mathematics and physics of interacting systems. Much of the world around us involves the networked interaction between a large number of components. The aim of this project is to develop new applications of exactly solved models in statistical mechanics. These include the study of quantum spin ladders of great interest in condensed matter physics. The physical properties of new and existing models will be derived to provide valuable benchmarks and predictions for future theoretical and experimental work. We will also undertake the study and development of a set of remarkable conjectures relating the properties of a solvable model to an established area of combinatorics. Another aspect of this project involves the investigation of the origins, growth and form of ancient stromatolites.
