The White Dwarf Luminosity Function and the History of Star Formation in the Galaxy. The numbers of white dwarfs at different brightnesses and colours maps out a continuous record of the star formation history of the Milky Way. Our program seeks to unravel that history using white dwarfs discovered with the SkyMapper Survey and thereby understand how our Milky Way galaxy and other galaxies evolved the form and mixture of sub-structures that we see today. These results will be widely disseminated ....The White Dwarf Luminosity Function and the History of Star Formation in the Galaxy. Illuminating the Universe with Exploding Stars. We are using Exploding Stars (Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts) to measure fundamental properties of the Universe. We use Type Ia Supernovaeto trace the Expansion History of the Universe and learn about the nature of the Dark Energy which currently dominates the Universe. We use Gamma Ray Bursts to illuminate the gas in and around galaxies to measure the chemical composition and structure of the Early Universe.
Discovering the First Generation of Stars in the Galaxy - The Most Metal-Poor Stars. The most metal-poor stars carry a fossil record of the early chemical and dynamical evolution of the Galaxy. The most interesting objects are those with the lowest metal abundances representing the earliest generation of stars in the Galaxy. The aim of the present project is to extend the mining of the HES objective spectra to identify extremely metal-deficient giants, which together with the already identified ....Discovering the First Generation of Stars in the Galaxy - The Most Metal-Poor Stars. The most interesting objects are those with the lowest metal abundances representing the earliest generation of stars in the Galaxy. The aim of the present project is to extend the mining of the HES objective spectra to identify extremely metal-deficient giants, which together with the already identified dwarfs will be further distilled using 6dF and the DBS. We anticipate trebling the total number of the most metal deficient stars known and targeting these for observations with 8m telescopes.Read moreRead less

Low-dimensional quantum systems. The theory of integrable systems of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory is currently one of most rapidly developing and fascinating subjects in theoretical physics and mathematics.
It allows to obtain an exact description of strongly-interacting quantum systems in one or two space dimensions and provides fundamental tools for understanding of critical phenomena and physics of small systems like quantum wires, carbon nanotubes and Josephson junctions ....Low-dimensional quantum systems. The theory of integrable systems of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory is currently one of most rapidly developing and fascinating subjects in theoretical physics and mathematics.
It allows to obtain an exact description of strongly-interacting quantum systems in one or two space dimensions and provides fundamental tools for understanding of critical phenomena and physics of small systems like quantum wires, carbon nanotubes and Josephson junctions. The project addresses two particular problems in this field: the three-dimensional lattice model with continuous spins and calculation of form factors in a two-dimensional massive field theory with a supersymmetry.

Low-order dynamical models for non-linear fluid behaviour in quasi two-dimensional plasmas. Two complex systems in which a magnetic field imposes two-dimensional fluid motions are turbulent fusion plasmas and magnetospheric plasmas. A distinctive property of 2D flows is the inverse energy cascade, whereby energy streaming into large-scale vortices, coherent structures, or sheared flows gives a remarkable propensity for self-organizing behaviour. This can be exploited to govern or guide our response to such systems. We propose to investigate the dynamics of momentum and energy exchange in these plasmas, using reduced dynamical models and bifurcation and stability mathematics. Expected outcomes are improved prediction of magnetospheric substorms and confinement of fusion plasmas.

New frontiers in statistical mechanics. The chiral Potts model has been introduced in 1981 as a model for commensurate-incommensurate phase transitions in a layer of atoms or molecules adsorbed to a solid surface. If the adsorbed atoms all fit to holes between the surface atoms, the added layer is frozen, commensurate with the surface. If the added atoms are unable to fit holes, the added layer is no longer commensurate with the surface and could be in a floating state. A deeper understanding of ....New frontiers in statistical mechanics. If the adsorbed atoms all fit to holes between the surface atoms, the added layer is frozen, commensurate with the surface. If the added atoms are unable to fit holes, the added layer is no longer commensurate with the surface and could be in a floating state. A deeper understanding of this and similar phenomena in layered systems has nanotechnological implications. This may affect the design of new small electronic devices or could apply to small biological systems and the development of new medicines. The project will surely lead to new applicable mathematics.Read moreRead less
Single Molecule Studies of Replisomal Function. It has recently become possible to watch the copying of DNA molecules with a specialized microscope in real time. In this new collaboration between scientists in Australia and the U.S.A., we will assemble these machines on single DNA molecules, watch how they work and simultaneously measure the very small forces that the machines generate. This will give Australian scientists access to a new technology for studying molecular machines.Read moreRead less

Ongoing changes in the Earth's atmosphere, demonstrate the need to understand photochemical processes and their role in atmospheric evolution. The proposed research will increase our understanding of the evolution of planetary atmospheres, with concomitant insight into the Earth's evolution. This proposal will greatly enhance the visibility of Australian research, through formal, direct connections to NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) planetary exploration missions, along with publications in Nature, Science, and/or PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) that will likely result from the high-profile problems to be studied. Furthermore, as a result of this collaboration, Australian students and postdoctoral researchers will benefit from interactions with top international scientists.Read moreRead less
