New Methods for Researching the Existence and Impact of Political Networks on the WWW. Web mining and data visualisation technologies will be employed in a new methodology for the study of online networks built by organisations (or any entity). The methodology will provide insights into the online networking behaviour of Australian political parties, producing information on how extensively parties are using the Web to connect with other groups, which parties use it most effectively and whether ....New Methods for Researching the Existence and Impact of Political Networks on the WWW. Web mining and data visualisation technologies will be employed in a new methodology for the study of online networks built by organisations (or any entity). The methodology will provide insights into the online networking behaviour of Australian political parties, producing information on how extensively parties are using the Web to connect with other groups, which parties use it most effectively and whether they form online political ?communities?. The methodology will be embodied in an integrated software package that will be of use to researchers in academia, government and business, and hence of significant commercial potential.Read moreRead less

The infrastructure will support and complement existing areas of specialisation at the three collaborating Victorian schools of architecture including research in urban modelling and simulation, building management and life-cycle simulations, spatial decision-making, automated data capture and modelling of complex building geometries for heritage applications. The broader aim of this network infrastructure is to provide a network of information sharing that will be useful to the built environment professional decision-makers including architects, planners, environmental scientists, geographers, and emergency planners, all of whom we trust will ultimately subscribe to the network once it is established.Read moreRead less
Investigations into machine learning applications in link analysis. Link analysis is an emerging tool for the detection of patterns in structured data. The detection of pattern in such data can lead to the detection of fraud occurrence, security breaches in computer systems, and patterns of social interactions with a community. It is also popularly applied to applications such as Web search engine designs and marketing analysis. This project aims to advance the area of link analysis by allowing ....Investigations into machine learning applications in link analysis. The detection of pattern in such data can lead to the detection of fraud occurrence, security breaches in computer systems, and patterns of social interactions with a community. It is also popularly applied to applications such as Web search engine designs and marketing analysis. This project aims to advance the area of link analysis by allowing the incorporation of contextual information which accounts for relationships among actors properly. Advances in link detection will allow improvements in security and Web services on which a wide field of national bodies rely. This project can help to place Australia at the forefront of this research area.Read moreRead less

This proposal will promote sharing and rapid secondary analysis of natural language and other qualitative data by providing interface standards between qualitative analysis systems, and will enhance the integration of analytic methods through improved archiving. This will be achieved by the construction and dissemination of open standards for the efficient, flexible transport and storage of annotation metadata, along with demonstrated implementations of these standards in qualitative tools. At the current stage of development of e-Social Science, the provision of middleware for collaborative work is more important than large-scale computational capability. The initiative will leverage existing ARC investment in qualitative data archiving.Read moreRead less

The central goal of this pilot project is the development and implementation of an Australian archaeological digital collection platform based on existing High Performance Computing techniques and infrastructure. This collection will facilitate the dissemination and interchange of archaeological data across disciplines and institutions and across the public and private sectors; enhance archaeological research; and contribute to discourses about Australian cultural heritage and identity. Our case study will be the Mill Point Archaeological Project in southeast Queensland. This initiative will build on existing developments made overseas and through strategic collaborations between UQ, ANU and the San Diego Supercomputer Center at UCSD.Read moreRead less
Precision Pulsar Timing and its Applications. The rapidly rotating pulsars known as millisecond pulsars have period stabilities which rival that of the best terrestrial clocks. For astronomy in particular, shared use is essential because of the very wide bandwidths needed to obtain sufficient sensitivity. Usage of the radio spectrum is increasing rapidly and radio telescopes are becoming more and more sensitive, compounding the problems. The digital signal processing techniques developed under this project will be widely applicable, not only to future radio astronomy facilities such as the Square Kilometer Array, but also to the communications industry generally.Read moreRead less
