The study is a collaborative venture with Champion Data, the Australian leader in the collection and transmission of real time sporting data, and official provider of the Australian Football League (AFL) statistics. The aim is to develop a real time on line predictive model for AFL football. The model will use the statistics Champion Data collect as the match progresses as inputs to continually update estimates of the probabilities of various outcomes of interest such as the winner of the match and the margin of victory. The project will assist Champion in their strategic aim to provide an on line form guide.Read moreRead less
Expenditure needs and drawdown of retirement savings during later life: how important are demographic factors and financial resources? Projections of expenditure patterns in retirement which allow for population heterogeneity will provide individuals with a better appreciation of their income needs and their savings requirements for a comfortable retirement. It will also enable financial institutions to develop products which better target retirees' needs over the course of retirement, and in addition it will enable improved assessment of aspects of Government income support policy. Specifically, understanding the complex interactions between private and public pensions, and concession card receipt upon expenditure behaviour, will enable more accurate costings of the public support of elderly families as Australia's population ages. Statistical science today is facing the challenge of having to answer questions about data that are more complex than ever before. Some of the major difficulties are caused by the lack of direct access to quantities of interest, and the more intricate structure of the available data. Motivated by applications in areas such as cancer and genetic studies, infectious disease, environmental pollution, and public health and nutrition, this project aims to develop novel and highly effective statistical methodology for solving contemporary problems involving new types of imperfectly observed data. The expected outcomes will solve frontier problems, where information can only be accessed through sophisticated computer intensive methods.Read moreRead less
Statistical challenges involving indirect data. This project aims to develop statistical methodology for solving contemporary problems involving indirectly observed data whose complexity is exacerbated by factors such as incompleteness or episodic availability. Modern statistics find it difficult to analyse complex data which contain important information only in an indirect way, such as data measured with noise or aggregated data. This project considers both finite dimensional data and function ....Statistical challenges involving indirect data. Modern statistics find it difficult to analyse complex data which contain important information only in an indirect way, such as data measured with noise or aggregated data. This project considers both finite dimensional data and functional data. The expected methodology will be able to solve frontier problems, where only sophisticated methods can access information. This is expected to benefit brain studies, economics, infectious disease, nutrition and public health.Read moreRead less
Multi-Group Stochastic Modelling of Population Balance for Gas-Liquid Flows. Multiphase flow systems are encountered in many process industries such as chemical, petroleum, mining, nuclear, energy, food and pharmaceutical, which are fundamental to the Australian economy. Commercially available computer codes for simulating such systems are currently widely used in many Australian industrial sectors. This research project will address the prevalent deficiency in many of these computer codes and ....Multi-Group Stochastic Modelling of Population Balance for Gas-Liquid Flows. Multiphase flow systems are encountered in many process industries such as chemical, petroleum, mining, nuclear, energy, food and pharmaceutical, which are fundamental to the Australian economy. Commercially available computer codes for simulating such systems are currently widely used in many Australian industrial sectors. This research project will address the prevalent deficiency in many of these computer codes and develop new models capable of predicting a wide range of industrial bubbly flow problems. The resultant improved computer codes will provide industries with significant benefits and, in particular, reduce times and costs in their design and production. Read moreRead less
New models for effective surveillance. This project will deliver new methods for generating the information that underpins sound resource management decisions, focusing on statistical techniques to deploy surveillance resources. Results will be relevant to a wide range of applications including setting realistic targets for the effectiveness of biosecurity and quarantine systems.
Overseeing the internet: new paradigms of network measurement. Like the electricity network, the internet is a core infrastructure, and so must be reliable and efficient. A gap in bandwidth supply is like a blackout in terms of lost business and productivity. This project will provide the measurement breakthroughs to ensure that network behaviour can be accurately and comprehensively monitored.
Nonparametric data analysis in statistical science. Changes in technology have enabled new types of data to be collected, often more complex and in much larger quantities than ever before, and altered fundamentally the types of questions that need to be asked of those data. Changes in technology have enabled new types of data to be collected, often more complex and in much larger quantities than ever before, and altered fundamentally the types of questions that need to be asked of those data. The research program will develop new statistical methods for analysing new types of data, for example functional data and data with many dimensions, and will also introduce greatly improved solutions to problems that involve more conventional data types. These techniques will have critical applications to diverse fields. The program will contribute substantially to capacity building in a strategically important area, statistical science, of great value to Australia but where chronic skills shortages exist.Read moreRead less

One in five Australians will experience a mental illness. This project will facilitate a new method for: (1) brain researchers to advance the fundamental understanding of mental illnesses and brain disorders; (2) medical clinicians to diagnose and assess the growing incidence of mental illness confronting Australia's ageing population, thereby addressing the ageing well and ageing productively national research priority; and, (3) neurosurgeons to guide surgery via localisation of major neural tracts. In addition to contributing to the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of Australia's endemic mental health burden, this project will advance Australia's skill-base and international standing in basic scientific research.Read moreRead less
