Nano-scale molecular and surface interactions will be manipulated to develop new nano-structured products. There will be two themes of research activity. In the first theme, newly discovered ionic liquids will be employed to better elucidate the role of hydrophobic interaction in molecular assembly processes. These findings will assist in the development of surfactant-drug conjugates that can self-assemble and can converge therapeutic, drug delivery and controlled release functions; allowing drugs to be administered in the therapeutic concentration range for prolonged periods of time with reduced side-effects. In the second theme, nano-materials will be used to converge capacitor and battery technologies to provide a dramatic performance boost to miniaturised portable electronic devices.Read moreRead less

Electronic and Optical Properties of Doped Titanium Dioxide. Titanium dioxide, is widely used as a white pigment, owing to its high refractive index, second, only after diamond. Yellowing of rutile pigment particles, observed on prolonged exposure to sunlight, is a serious problem that pigment manufacturers would like to overcome. It is proposed that aluminium-doping of rutile limits this discolouration by altering the electronic structure of the rutile particles. This project seeks to identify the specific electronic cause of the yellowing process, the nature of the Al defect,it's effect on the electronic structure of rutile, and the electronic perturbations that may occur when other dopants are used.Read moreRead less
Effect of cane sugar juice composition on scaling rate and scale composition in sugar mills. The Australia sugar industry produces 1100 GWh of renewable electricity annually, abating ~1.1 M tonnes of CO2-equivalent of greenhouse gases. This can be increased if the juice evaporation performance, which largely determines the energy efficiency of the sugar factory, can be improved through reduced fouling of evaporators. This project will investigate the effect of juice composition on fouling of sug ....Effect of cane sugar juice composition on scaling rate and scale composition in sugar mills. This can be increased if the juice evaporation performance, which largely determines the energy efficiency of the sugar factory, can be improved through reduced fouling of evaporators. This project will investigate the effect of juice composition on fouling of sugar factory evaporators so that a model to predict scale type and scale propensity can be developed. This will enable the development of better scale control strategies, resulting in reduced energy usage and reduced usage of the hazardous and polluting chemicals required to remove scale.Read moreRead less

There is great opportunity for Australia to save energy and money through the development of glass which excludes heat. This project builds on UTS research into the use of gold and silver nanoparticles in spectrally-selective coatings for windows. It will develop novel, low-cost in situ deposition processes to lay down ultra-thin coatings of gold nano-rods and other shapes on glass, creating coatings that have a neutral colour in the visible wavelengths, but which block infra-red light. Coated glass of this type has major application in the building industry as well as export potential.Read moreRead less
