Quench and deformation dilatometer for studying phase transformations: The quenching and deformation dilatometer is a high precision thermal analysis tool used to measure phase transformations in situ. This technique can make time-resolved measurements of transformations under the extreme conditions of heating, cooling and deformation that are experienced during industrial processing. This instrument will be the only one in Australia capable of temperature changes above 2000 degrees Celsius and will also be the only one equipped with a cryogenic module. The instrument is intended to be used to characterise new processing technologies and new alloy systems such as advanced high strength steels, age hardenable magnesium, high entropy alloys, and cluster hardening aluminium alloys.Read moreRead less

A glow discharge optical emission spectrometer for challenging surfaces. This project aims to address a critical surface characterisation gap in Australian research by the implementation of a glow-discharge optical emission spectrometer. This project aims to address a critical surface characterisation gap in Australian research by the implementation of a glow-discharge optical emission spectrometer. Determining the composition depth profile of chemically complex surfaces that are rough, fragile, and air-sensitive is very challenging. The project will allow rapid and accurate elemental depth profiling of surface layers up to hundreds of microns in thickness and with nanometre resolution. Critically this instrument allows glovebox-to-instrument analysis without surface preparation, preserving the in-situ state of the surface. This will fast-track research in battery materials, new methods to control corrosion, and the design of advanced engineered surfaces.Read moreRead less
Highly ordered and tunable extracellular DNA micro- and nanopatterns for investigating the attachment mechanisms of pseudomonas aeruginosa to surfaces. Preventing infectious bacteria from colonising artificial surfaces is a major scientific challenge. New engineered surfaces will be designed to better understand how the important pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa sticks to surfaces, facilitating new ways of reducing infections acquired from the surface of, for example, medical devices.

This project aims to develop a functional strontium-release surface on magnesium-based orthopaedic implants to suppress the rapid degradation rate of magnesium, facilitate new bone formation and ultimately shorten the healing process. The development of practical, bone-favourable and degradation-inhibiting surfaces for magnesium implants are in demand and can bring significant patient benefits. The project seeks to establish an understanding of the formation mechanisms of strontium-releasing coatings and determine the critical release rate of strontium to activate bone cell responses.Read moreRead less
Next generation chromium free primers for galvanised steel. This project aims to develop a new family of chrome-free primers to protect galvanised steel against corrosion. Corrosion resistance is a critical factor in durability of galvanised steel, which is usually protected from corrosion by a primer and topcoat, which prolong life and provide aesthetics. The primer coating contains chromates. Chromates are recognised for their toxicity, but in spite of this they unfortunately remain the industry standard. Chromate-free primers are urgently required, and this project aims to conduct fundamental research to enable their development.Read moreRead less

with sub-micrometers or spanning millimetre-sized regions from room temperature up to 800oC. The equipment
with much enhanced features will be unique in Australia with the added Raman and a hot stage.
The combination of Raman and nanoindentation allows the mechanical property to be correlated to physical
characteristics such as chemical bonds and physical state, volume fractionation of crystallinity, amorphous and
unpolymerised phases, molecular orientation, residual strain, polymer cross-linking, surface treatment effects.Read moreRead less
Designer microstructures through cold spray powder deposition. Additive manufacturing routes are very attractive in terms of reduced material usage and shorter lead times. This project will look at opportunities for the expansion of one such process (cold spray) from surfacing using a single powder feedstock to three-dimensional construction of multi-powder mixtures into high performance components.
