Professor Misiolek will spend an extended six month period at The University of Queensland. The specific aim of the project is to develop a method to machine aluminium composites in the green, or unsintered, state. This will overcome a major impediment to the wider utilisation of aluminium matrix composites, which have an attractive combination of properties but cannot be formed into complex shapes using conventional processing methodologies.Read moreRead less

A novel fundamental approach to enable net shape manufacturing of low-cost high-performance titanium alloys . Oxygen is the bottleneck issue of titanium powder metallurgy, which radically deteriorates the ductility of titanium. This project aims to develop the essential fundamental knowledge and technical solutions to mitigate the detrimental effect of oxygen on the ductility of as-sintered titanium products and enable the net-shape fabrication of low-cost high-performance titanium alloys. This will be achieved by utilising the inexpensive and unique titanium hydride powder, rather than titanium metal powder, and by developing effective oxygen scavengers. The outcomes will form a robust basis for the creation of a viable titanium hydride powder metallurgy business.Read moreRead less

The addition of solute increases the strength of Mg in some crystallographic directions but weakens the material in others. The weakening is called solid solution softening, and it can have profound effects on the mechanical behaviour of the material. Solid solution softening has been observed in the prismatic planes of single crystals of dilute Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys. Easier prismatic slip lowers the strain hardening rate and increases the ductility of polycrystalline alloys in comparison with pure Mg. Despite their obvious significance, these effects have not been studied in single crystals of concentrated alloys. This is the main object of this project.Read moreRead less

Understanding grain boundary segregation - a route to developing new advanced engineering materials. This project will investigate atomic-scale grain boundary segregation - one of the most important factors influencing the properties of engineering alloys. This will be applied in the development of new Ti, Zr and nanocrystalline alloys with a large potential market and for which Australia is extremely well positioned to become a major producer.

The project intends to develop methods to tune the microstructure of materials in additive manufacturing so that components can be manufactured with maximum productivity and properties. Additive manufacturing is leading the mass customisation of manufacturing. Designed tunable microstructures enable structure and properties to be tailored for specific applications. One of the greatest challenges, however, is how to control the scale and morphology of the microstructure. This project aims to use the interdependence model of grain refinement to control and design grain sizes. The project first plans to investigate the near-rapid solidification conditions in aluminium alloys. It then plans to re-design the harder-to-manufacture titanium alloys to improve grain size control.Read moreRead less
