The facility will foster a more innovative research culture and provide excellent research training at the highest international level, and will provide a platform to maximise access to the new Opal Research Reactor and Australian Synchrotron.Read moreRead less
Structure of Water-Based Polymer and Surfactant Lubricant Layers. The aim of this work is to understand the structures formed by mixtures of polymers and surfactant (detergent or soap) on solid surfaces, and especially how this structure affects the performance of the mixed layer as a lubricant. We will investigate a variety of polymer and surfactant molecules and their mixtures, determining the structure directly by atomic force microscopy imaging and measuring the sliding and adhesive forces using the surface force appararus. This will enable us to better understand water-based lubricants and design new lubricating layers.Read moreRead less

The results of this research will help to advance the fundamental scientific understanding of industrially important chemical reactions and give clear leads as to how to improve them. In particular, new catalysts (i.e. agents that increase the speed and selectivity of chemical reactions) will be generated and the first steps towards process innovation will be taken, using high-throughput equipment unique in the Southern Hemisphere. These new catalysts will be the basis for the design of new and/or improved industrial processes that will be ?greener?, safer, use fewer resources, produce less waste and are generally more efficient and effective. As a result the Australian chemicals industry will be more competitive.Read moreRead less
Molecular Recognition in Chiral Ionic Liquids as Basis for the Design and Synthesis of New Enantioselective Heterogeneous Catalysts and Membranes. Molecules that can exist as mirror images, each with different, e.g., beneficial vs. toxic properties, underpin the pharmaceutical industry and increasingly new highly selective pesticides, and flavours/fragrances.
Current commercial pathways often make mixtures of the mirror images that then need to be separated laboriously. These routes are inefficient, creating waste and use resources poorly.
We aim to create solutions for these problems, using supported thin films of special, new types of salts that are liquid at room temperature, and which have other unusual chemical properties that make them ideally suited to enable efficient conversions.Read moreRead less
Exploiting the properties of gold nanoparticles for nanolithography using visible wavelengths. The next generation of nano-devices, such as biosensors and molecular electronics, will require nanopatterning as part of the production process. Conventional optical lithographies cannot provide sufficient resolution, and alternative techniques, such as e-beam lithographies are expensive. This project aims to demonstrate a solution to this problem with obvious commercial benefit. It is the first time a multidisciplinary team has made such a concerted effort to understand the unusual science of gold nanoparticles and will strengthen Australia's already considerable reputation in this field.Read moreRead less

The flexibility and versatility of nanotemplating processes will be exploited to fabricate novel porous inorganic structures with controllable properties. These include tailorable surface area, pore size and structure, particle size and composition. The influence of such properties will be studied in various applications, including the photocatalytic decomposition of pollutants, where the ability to control the morphological structure of the inorganic materials introduced by the templating technique will lead to enhanced efficiencies. These nanostructures will also be considered for use in solar cells, an alternative energy source that is currently receiving copious attention worldwide.Read moreRead less

The auto-dimming mirror industry is worth in excess of US$500 million per annum, with predictions of industry sales of US$2 billion. This project will tap existing Australian manufacturing capabilities and utilise the intellectual capacity of internationally recognised scientists from UoW and UniSA. The science behind this proposed development will have significance well beyond its initial scope with applications in areas such as ophthalmic lenses, architectural glazing and electronic textiles providing further Australian opportunities in these rapidly developing areas.Read moreRead less

Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron-Beam Technique. Neutron scattering is one of the most powerful and important investigative tools in the study of materials. Australia has only a low-flux neutron source, HIFAR, which provides no cold or hot neutrons. This excludes large, important areas of science, such as functional films, polymers, self-assembly systems, biological materials, colloids and emulsions, and real-time in-situ studies.

Australia has only a low-flux neutron source, HIFAR, which provides no cold or hot neutrons. This excludes large, important areas of science, such as functional films, polymers, self-assembly systems, biological materials, colloids and emulsions, and real-time in-situ studies.
This application aims to continue Australia's parnership with the world's most intense neutron source, ISIS in the UK, in order to sustain the considerable Australian scientific momentum which now relies on ISIS.
The outcome will be new science that cannot be generated solely within Australia.Read moreRead less
