Through a multilayered analysis of gender, class, life course stage, time allocation and the connections between them, it will demonstrate links between various forms of social and economic participation and identify how they could be distributed more evenly. This project aims to investigate the everyday lives and imagined futures of Australian girls who leave mainstream schooling before Year 12, a group often overlooked because of a prime concern with ‘problem boys’. Following 30 girls with disrupted transitional pathways over two years enables a micro-sociological analysis of how the girls’ (dis-)connections to people, places and institutions develop over time. The social laboratory in Australia and New Zealand is now viewed as a reactionary social model. This project plans to extend a large longitudinal study of young people in Queensland to investigate the impact of social, political and economic changes on educational, workforce, partnering, family and housing transitions in early adulthood. The project is designed to combine large-scale survey research with in-depth qualitative interviewing to track stability and change in the values, aspirations, health and wellbeing of a cohort of young people who were first surveyed as secondary school students a decade earlier.
