Summary
Spatially Integrated Social Science Research in Australia. Rapid change across society has resulted in shifts to the scope of social science research including the emergence of space and place as an important concept. Across research fields the result has been that a range of innovative and unique techniques, methodologies and theories that are space based are now being developed. While research is progressing rapidly, it is undertaken in parallel by researchers who can not always collaborate. ....Spatially Integrated Social Science Research in Australia. Emotional Behaviour in England, 1930-1980. My aim is produce a study of emotional behaviour in England. This will be a contribution to the expanding history of gender and of the self. The project will demonstrate the importance, in terms of insights into cultural change, of recovery of previous emotional standards. Additionally it will test the claims that have been made about governmentality in the twentieth century.
Contraception understandings and experiences of Australian women. Most women use contraception for much of their lives, yet we know little about how they experience the effects on their bodies and relationships. This in-depth study will explore women's thoughts, feelings and experiences and the results will be used for training doctors and nurses in contraceptive counselling and prescribing.

The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

Home and away?: Defining and conceptualising rural youth migration in Australia. The project addresses the Priority Goal of 'Strengthening Australia's social and economic health' in seeking a more precise understanding of the causes and actual migration pathways of Australian rural youth, and the extent to which these migrants return to their home regions. This understanding is critical for future key service delivery planning (e.g. health, including aged care), for labour force development plan ....Home and away?: Defining and conceptualising rural youth migration in Australia. Disability and ability: how young people with impairments make the transition to adulthood. Compared to their able-bodied peers, 15-29 year olds with disabilities have an increased risk of negative social, physical and mental health outcomes. By analysing the life histories of 100 young people with physical impairments and tracking their development over four years, this project will explore how to reduce these risks.
Japan, Australia and the Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) Fishery: Social and Political Perspectives. In 1999 negotiations over the annual tonnage of the SBT fishery allocated to Japan broke down over disagreements about how much fishing effort SBT stocks could survive. Australia resorted to the international legal system and, although Australia eventually accepted Japan's position, bilateral relations have remained troubled over SBT. Philanthropy, celebrity and governance in the People's Republic of China. The project is the first major study of the new phenomenon of celebrity philanthropy and its governance in present-day China. It will provide knowledge of government and philanthropic responses to some of the problems associated with unequal development in China and increase Australians' capacity to engage effectively with a rapidly changing China.
Reconceptualising industry sector development within the contemporary Australian city: The case of the information technology sector. This project will aim to uncover the reasons why Australia's Information Technology industry is ranked low among OECD countries by evaluating the impact of global and urban geography of the sector on the sector's performance.
