Summary
Spatially Integrated Social Science Research in Australia. Rapid change across society has resulted in shifts to the scope of social science research including the emergence of space and place as an important concept. Across research fields the result has been that a range of innovative and unique techniques, methodologies and theories that are space based are now being developed. While research is progressing rapidly, it is undertaken in parallel by researchers who can not always collaborate. ....Spatially Integrated Social Science Research in Australia. Strengthening urban slum upgrading and urban governance in cities in Southeast Asia. 1. Improve the approach to evaluating the impact of slum upgrading in building institutional capacity, and thereby, on the longer-term continuity of poverty reduction for poor communities. These lessons can be applied in impoverished settlements in developed and developing countries;
2. Enhance best practice in planning upgrading projects and design of governance frameworks. Australia has an international reputation for innovative and high impact research into the states, societies, and economies of Asia.
The Initiative will survey the volume, range, impact, and international status of Asian area research in Australia, identify themes with high potential for achieving significant outcomes through transnational research and research-training, and develop a strategy for maximizing national research capacity in targeted areas through a national inter-disciplinary network for Asia-area research - Network Asia.
Outcomes include a published report on the state of the field and a strategic plan for a viable and sustainable research network.

Wild Man from Borneo: species, race, representation. This project addresses the representation of species boundaries in Western accounts of the orangutan in the 19th and 20th centuries. Darwinian theory raised the possibility that animals could ?evolve?. Orangutans seemed ?closest? to humans and therefore raised key questions about the border between humans and animals. These questions were addressed in a vast range of scientific, popular, imaginative and juvenile literature. Even when ecolo ....Wild Man from Borneo: species, race, representation. This project will: develop new measures that capture the unique dimensions of this movement (frequency, duration and seasonality); show how circulation in Australia varies over time and space; develop model profiles; quantify local imp ....Circular Mobility in Australia: Types, Measures, Patterns and Impacts. The rapid growth of circular mobility (temporary overnight absences from home) for work and leisure reflects newly emerging spatial relationships that trigger massive flux in local populations. This project, in collaboration with Public Trust offices across Australia, will provide a national database on which sectors of the population fail to make wills and why. The results will inform innovative service models, law reform initiatives and public education campaigns.

Australia has long been looked to as an example for legislative and community responses to new medical technologies and as a leader in debates about medical ethics. The project will contribute to the international profile of Australia as a leader in health policy issues, as well as sustaining a focus on informed community debate.
China’s Law-Based Governance Revolution under Xi Jinping . To sustain its unmitigated power, the Chinese Communist Party is transforming its legal ideology and governance focus to make politico-legal institutions more capable of supervising and moulding people’s behaviour and beliefs. This project aims to examine how this transformation is constructed by key institutions and digested into public policy and legal decision-making guidelines.
