Summary
National Indigenous Research and Knowledges Network. The National Indigenous Research and Knowledges Network will capacity build and increase Indigenous higher degree, early and mid career researchers to develop new approaches to undertaking research and producing outcomes. NIRAKN's members include a number of universities, AIATSIS, and partner organisations.
Reciprocal Accountability and Public Value in Aboriginal Organisations. This project aims to examine the different meanings of ‘public value’ and accountability in the work of Aboriginal organisations. Aboriginal organisations in the Kimberley region are funded by governments to deliver services that are of value to the public. They also reflect Aboriginal culture and identity, and represent Aboriginal interests. This also creates value for their own publics. Deficit discourse frames Indigenous identity in a narrative of negativity and deficiency. Recent work indicates that deficit discourse is active in policy, public debate, pedagogy and practice, and its prevalence in Indigenous education influences student performance. This project aims to produce the first detailed investigation of the acquisition of Indigenous human remains from Australia, New Zealand and the broader Pacific by the Russian Empire during the long 19th century. It expects to generate new knowledge about Imperial Russia's scientific networks, anthropological collections and underlying intellectual traditions. Remembering dispossession: interpreting Aboriginal historical narratives. Since the arrival of the British, Aboriginal people have sought to make sense of their experiences of colonisation through telling powerful and memorable stories. This study not only reveals the richness of Aboriginal historical stories, but also models ways of using them in the telling of new Australian histories.
Improved Indigenous population projections for policy and planning. This project will use a range of methods to understand the population dynamics of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) population. This information will allow policy makers to plan and target resources and help Indigenous organisations understand what is happening to the population in their communities.
