Summary
Although active brain cells are known to survive for much longer than inactive ones, the mechanism underpinning this essential process has remained elusive. We have uncovered a direct coupling between neuronal activity and survival signals. The purpose of this grant application is to establish the molecular mechanism underpinning this coupling and understand how neuropathic pathogens manage to harness it with devastating effects to the brain.

Following brain damage tissue needs to be rebuilt and newborn nerve cells need to survive. Identification of factors that enhance the numbers and promote the survival and appropriate integration of newborn nerve cells is therefore important and over the last few years we have identified two regulatory factors that are prime candidates to enhance numbers and survival of newborn neurons following injury: the Rho pathway and suppressor of cytokine signalling-2, which we will test for effectiveness ....Following brain damage tissue needs to be rebuilt and newborn nerve cells need to survive. Summary
As many as 30% of people with subarachnoid haemorrahge (SAH) die within 90 days. Survivors are often left disabled. Death rates appear to be decreasing. Identifying health service variables that impact positively on survival has the potential to inform health policy and practice. We will describe variations in mortality, hospital re-admission and patterns of care. The study will observe the uptake of new SAH management including new neurosurgical techniques.
