The provision of Broadband Internet services to the home also requires extremely-fast 'backbone' connections between cities to carry the additional traffic demands.
In a previous project funded by the ARC, Monash researchers developed Optical-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology to increase the information-carrying capacity of optical fibers simply by plugging in new circuit boards at exchanges. This is now being commercialised by a new Australian company, to considerable international acclaim. This project aims to provide the next generation of this technology, which will support even faster internet and will ensure the long-term future of Australian telecommunications manufacturing.

Embedded Dispersion Measurement for Fibre Optic Transport Systems. This project addresses an important problem in long-haul optical transport systems and a solution would simplify the deployment, faultfinding and operation of these systems. A positive outcome may lead to an opportunity to license the technology to existing equipment manufacturers. Furthermore, the proposed solution involves optical and electronic technology that is within the capability of Australian industry. There will also ....Embedded Dispersion Measurement for Fibre Optic Transport Systems. Stability Analysis of Power System with Massive Power Electronic Devices. The decarbonization of Australia's power systems is to integrate massive renewable energy sources which are interfaced with many power electronic devices (PEDs). The fast and complex dynamics of PEDs have significantly changed the nature of the power system, which limits the applicability of existing tools and methods to assess its stability. The goal of this project is to gain a comprehensive insight into the stability of ....Stability Analysis of Power System with Massive Power Electronic Devices. The goal of this project is to gain a comprehensive insight into the stability of a futuristic power system with high penetration of PEDs. The intended outcomes will be a model and data jointly driven methodology for high-efficient and real-time stability assessment. The methodology developed in this project will support Australia's transition to a stable, secure, and low-carbon power grid.Read moreRead less
Novel Partial Discharge Detection Technique based on an Overhead Transmission Line Sensing Architecture. Overhead power transmission systems are a common instigator of fires through the production of sparks from faulty insulators. Overhead power transmission systems are a common instigator of fires through the production of sparks from faulty insulators. Australia is experiencing extended hot and dry conditions that amplify the risk of these events becoming large scale bushfires, causing millions of dollars of damage and destroying immeasurable amounts of native flora and fauna. The overhead transmission line sensing system proposed in this research will provide power companies with a cost effective insulator condition monitoring tool to continually survey Australia's aging electrical infrastructure. This ensures a reliable electricity supply to consumers, while also protecting the ecosystems of Australia's bushland. Read moreRead less
Revealing the evolutionary and ecological dynamics of avian influenza virus. This project aims to understand how avian influenza virus (AIV) emerges, evolves and spreads in wild birds. This project aims to understand how avian influenza virus (AIV) emerges, evolves and spreads in wild birds. AIV has the potential to devastate the poultry industry and cause human pandemics, but the factors that shape the genetic diversity of AIV in its wild bird reservoir are poorly understood. The project plans to combine genomic, ecological and phylogenetic approaches to reveal key aspects of AIV evolution, as well as the risk for future viral emergence. Using sampling sites in Australia and Antarctica, it plans to investigate AIV diversity, the evolutionary dynamics of AIV in wild birds and poultry, and the role played by environmental transmission in AIV ecology.Read moreRead less

The outcomes of this project will have immense benefit to Australia. They impact upon two areas of national importance, namely ensuring an environmentally sustainable Australia, and safeguarding Australia. In particular, the project will provide models, methodology and optimal strategies for sustainable use of Australia's biodiversity, for protecting Australia from invasive diseases and pests, and for protecting Australia from terrorism and crime. Special focus will be given to the control of invasive species, the control of emerging infections, and the optimal allocation of resources. The current risks posed by invasive diseases and pests, and the alarming rate of destruction of biodiversity, warrant urgent funding of this project.Read moreRead less
Whiteness: writing, reading, race. The national and community benefits of this project lie in the contribution it will make to the wider work of Australian reconciliation through its analyses of writing as one of the important meeting grounds between white and Aboriginal Australians. By analysing the race relations of writing culture, the project will contribute to the important work of understanding white-Indigenous relations in contemporary postcolonial Australia.
