DNAP is a major supplier of explosive services to mines that produce coal, iron ore and gold for export. The work in this project will lead to more efficient explosives emulsions and allow mining tolower total cost per unit sold. Such improvements in mining efficiencies will have a direct impact of the selling price of the product. Increased export earnings and a greater number of people employed in the industry would be direct results of the successful completion of the work proposed.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop a new generation of sustainable surfactants utilising Australian-grown oilseed feedstocks. These molecules are designed to replace current materials made from petroleum and palm oil, to fulfil a key role as the next generation of bio-resourced detergents and emulsifiers. The work seek to develop a library of new molecules to better understand the relationship between molecular structure and performance, through cutting edge lab testing and utilising national infrastructure, guiding the use of new components in formulating new products. It is anticipated that the surfactants generated will find uses in household cleaning and personal care products, providing high value chemicals from key Australian crops.Read moreRead less
Controlling density, viscosity and crystallisation in emulsion explosives to enhance safety and efficiency of blasting operations. The performance of emulsion explosives used throughout the mining industry can be severely compromised by the effects of shear arising from pumping and detonation shock waves. Understanding how shear affects droplet coalescence and crystallisation is critical in differential energy blasting, where emulsion density and composition vary widely along the bore hole. This project aims to contribute to the understanding of the effects of shear, and develop new methods and additives to stabilise droplets and bubbles over a wide range of compositions and conditions. The goal of this project is to improve the efficiency and safety of rock-blasting operations, reduce environmental impact, and reduce operating costs, giving the Australian mining industry a competitive edge.Read moreRead less

The nature of the electrolyte used as well as the electrode substrate and the electrochemical parameters will be optimised with a view to achieving Ti deposits of high purity or Fe-Ti alloys of controlled composition. The effect of these parameters on the morphology of the deposits obtained will be determined. The products obtained here are expected to find application in construction industries and for energy storage.Read moreRead less

Enhancing the economic viability and the energy efficiency of chemical transformations is of fundamental importance in the chemicals industry, and is essential in the targeted production of drugs and fine chemicals for frontier technologies. By using multiple metal centres to simultaneously promote series of reaction steps in a single pot, this project will develop an innovative approach to efficient syntheses of biologically active molecules. The new methods and new catalysts for enhancing the synthesis of highly functionalised compounds will improve significantly the environmental impact of chemical processes by reducing the amount of chemicals required, and reducing waste and energy requirements.Read moreRead less

The Australia sugar industry produces 1100 GWh of renewable electricity annually, abating ~1.1 M tonnes of CO2-equivalent of greenhouse gases. This can be increased if the juice evaporation performance, which largely determines the energy efficiency of the sugar factory, can be improved through reduced fouling of evaporators. This project will investigate the effect of juice composition on fouling of sugar factory evaporators so that a model to predict scale type and scale propensity can be developed. This will enable the development of better scale control strategies, resulting in reduced energy usage and reduced usage of the hazardous and polluting chemicals required to remove scale.Read moreRead less
