Investigating the role of the innate immune complement system in the abnormal development of the central nervous system. Past research has discovered a surprising link between the immune system, dietary folate deficiency and the development of the embryonic brain. This project will investigate the immune system in the developing brain, in order to understand the causes of developmental defects such as neural tube defects, and the role dietary folate plays in this process.
Resolving the Structures of Human Muscarinic M1 and M4 Receptors. Muscarinic receptors are vital for most basic human brain functions. These receptors are changed in schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. This project will determine the structure and localisation of two of these receptors in order to i) understand their roles in brain disorders and ii) develop drugs to treat disorders involving them.

The aim of this project is to discover how cells in the brain combine different types of information to allow decisions to be made. This project will focus on the part of the brain that integrates multiple sources of information to guide choices to accomplish behavioural goals. Using novel electrophysiological and engineering techniques, this project intends to measure the influence of sensory and cognitive information relayed by other brain areas, and to determine how this correlates with behaviour. The intended outcome of this project is a new understanding of how information is processed in brain cells. This should benefit the development of neural engineering devices.Read moreRead less
Regulation of neurite outgrowth by an inhibitor of PI3K signalling. PIPP is an enzyme which inhibits important cellular functions such as cell maturation. We have shown the amount of PIPP is increased in Alzheimer's disease brains. This project will characterise the mechanisms by which PIPP regulates brain cell function to identify how PIPP may be acting to exacerbate Alzheimer's disease development/progression.
Microfluidic models of the CNS: Understanding cells, circuits & synapses. Aims: We aim to develop new cell culture platforms to form defined networks of brain cells. These platforms will be used to determine the critical mechanisms underpinning central nervous system function.
Significance: The devices developed will enable an unprecedented capacity to monitor changes throughout a network, with analysis at the level of the synapse, cell and circuit.
Expected outcomes: We will advance knowledge ....Microfluidic models of the CNS: Understanding cells, circuits & synapses. It will employ a novel synthetic biology approach to form two distinct peptide-enabled molecular architectures in a single system. This is expected to deliver a platform technology that will allow successful programmed delivery of viral vectors. The project is likely to deliver significant societal benefit as a fundamental scientific platform, improving Australia's capacity and impact in the agriculture and the healthcare sectors. The platform technology has the potential to increase the quality of life for patients and their carers, while also produce fitter, healthier livestock.Read moreRead less
Genetic dissection of functional-structural connectivity using optogenetic fMRI and dMRI tractography. The project will map the connectivity pattern of genetically defined neurons in mouse brain by combining state of the art molecular and neuroscience imaging technology. The outcome will be a significant step toward building a complete functional and structural mapping resource, with application for examining dysfunction in neurological disease models.

The diverse roles of ion channels include action potential generation, control of ion flow across secretory and epithelial cells, and regulation of cell volume, motility and proliferation. Pharmacological modulators are powerful tools for probing ion channel function, but for most channels these tools are lacking. Thus, this project aims to develop the first comprehensive toolbox of ion channel modulators using an integrated in vitro/in vivo electrophysiology platform. These pharmacological tools will be made freely available to the Australian research community for probing the mechanism and physiological function of ion channels.Read moreRead less

This facility will provide a platform for Australian researchers to quantitatively measure genetic information in a rapid, accurate and cost-efficient manner. This technology will enhance Australia's ability to perform basic research into the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of cellular function.
Engineering new tools to aid structure determination of membrane proteins. This project aims to address the inherent instability of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are cell-surface proteins that are a major drug targets. The instability of GPCRs has resulted in a lack of atomic-level structural information that has hindered structure-based drug discovery efforts. This project expects to develop tools to improve GPCR stability and streamline the structure determination process.
