This project aims to solve one of the fundamental problems in astrophysics, how the first stars in the Universe were formed after the Big Bang. Using high-resolution simulations, including magnetic fields and jet/outflow feedback, the mass function of the first stars can be determined. The project will transform our understanding of how the first heavy elements were created in the Universe, providing crucial input for Australian-lead international and national observational surveys, and semi-analytic models of galaxy, star and planet formation, all directly following the formation of the first stars. This project will contribute to three of the six big questions defined in the Decadal Plan for Australian Astronomy 2016-2025, expand knowledge in the physical sciences and drive the next generation of large facilities and Australian frontier technologies.Read moreRead less

How dark matter influences the formation and evolution of galaxies is to this day an outstanding question in astrophysics. To answer it, world-class facilities and a unique combination of observations and theory are required. This DP team, a world-class team of observers and theorists, will tackle this question by leveraging on two multi-million dollar projects: the MAGPI galaxy survey and the hydrodynamical simulations suite EAGLE-XL. MAGPI will deliver exquisite kinematics for hundreds of galaxies in the middle ages of the Universe, providing a view to the effect of dark matter on galaxies at this critical time, while EAGLE-XL represents the technological frontier in simulations and provides the best interpretative framework for MAGPI.Read moreRead less
The key role of black holes in galaxy evolution. This project will determine the effect of black holes on galaxy formation using sophisticated supercomputer simulations of radiation, jets and winds interacting with multi-phase interstellar gas in the host galaxy. The results of these simulations will be calibrated against radio and optical observations and incorporated into larger scale simulations describing the growth of structure in the Universe and the evolution of galaxies. Two new radio telescope arrays are under construction in Australia. One is the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, near Geraldton. The other is a very long baseline array with antennae near Hobart, Katherine, and Yarragadee. These three antennae work together to observe radio sources far away across the universe. Their observations are used to establish a very accurate coordinate system or reference frame on the earth, to which the global positioning system is aligned. This program will use these new radio telescope arrays to study the Milky Way and other galaxies, and to study continental drift and sea-level rise on the Earth.Read moreRead less
The evolution of mass and energy over the past 13 billion years. The universe has slowly transformed atomic material into a range of structures from planets, stars, galaxies, clusters and filaments. In the process the universe has generated energy at almost all wavelengths. This project will build a model to explain the evolution of mass, energy and structure in the universe and will test the model using the latest data.

For decades astronomers have puzzled over the connection between the structure and evolution of galaxies and the role played by host environments. This project aims to resolve this problem by combining multi-wavelength observations, multi-component simulations, and pioneering data analysis using artificial intelligence. In particular, we target the nearby Fornax galaxy cluster as a laboratory for studying galaxy formation in dense environments. Using our novel machine learning techniques, we will elucidate the physical mechanisms that drive the rapid evolution of star formation, galactic nuclei, and gas and dust content within Fornax. Our predictions will benefit ongoing and future surveys at the national and international level. Read moreRead less
The Taipan Survey - Cosmology in the Nearby Universe. This project aims to support the Taipan (Transforming Astronomical Imaging-surveys through Polychromatic Analysis of Nebulae) survey, which is designed to measure redshifts for 500 000 galaxies and peculiar velocities for 50 000 galaxies in the nearby universe. The survey aims to yield the most precise direct measurement of the present-day expansion rate of the universe, the largest maps of the density and velocity fields of local structures, ....The Taipan Survey - Cosmology in the Nearby Universe. This project aims to support the Taipan (Transforming Astronomical Imaging-surveys through Polychromatic Analysis of Nebulae) survey, which is designed to measure redshifts for 500 000 galaxies and peculiar velocities for 50 000 galaxies in the nearby universe. The survey aims to yield the most precise direct measurement of the present-day expansion rate of the universe, the largest maps of the density and velocity fields of local structures, and new and stringent tests of large-scale gravitational physics using galaxy motions, probing Einstein’s theory of gravity and alternatives. It is expected that the Taipan database will add substantial value to research with the SkyMapper telescope and the Australian SKA Pathfinder. The project also aims to demonstrate an innovative Australian robotic technology ('starbugs') that will be used in the next-generation Giant Magellan Telescope.Read moreRead less

The project aims to contribute to the answer to a fundamental question: how galaxies, including our own, evolved over the Universe's history. The project plans to develop sophisticated spectral models and use them to extract crucial information on star formation, stellar populations, interstellar gas and dust properties from modern galaxy surveys at different cosmic epochs using a consistent framework. These imaging and spectroscopic surveys would be complemented with measurements of the total gas reservoir of galaxies, obtaining a full census of the baryons in galaxies. Together, these may deliver significant insights into how the growth of galaxies, driven by the fuelling, efficiency and outputs of star formation, depends on galaxy properties in the local and distant Universe.Read moreRead less
