This project aims to understand what drives the navigation of small and large organisms. To achieve this, the project seeks to develop a mathematical framework that unifies models of navigation, communication and uncertainty, for the first time. This is significant as navigation underpins fundamental behaviour such as migration. Expected outcomes of this project include novel insights into the mechanisms underlying navigation, and new mathematical techniques required to construct the framework. The mathematical framework will be employed to explore and explain critical biological phenomena such as the impact of noise pollution on whale migration, and the conditions required for successful cellular navigation.Read moreRead less
New Directions in Bayesian Statistics: formulation, computation and application to exemplar challenges. Bayesian statistics is a fundamental statistical and machine learning approach for density estimation, data analysis and inference. Bayesian statistics is a fundamental statistical and machine learning approach for density estimation, data analysis and inference. However, there remain open questions regarding the formulation of the model, the likelihood and priors, and efficient computation. This project proposes new approaches that address these issues, and applies them to two exemplar challenges: the impact of climate change on the Great Barrier Reef and better understanding neurological diseases related aging, in particular Parkinson's Disease. The evolution of cooperative communication. This interdisciplinary project will provide a broad understanding of communication in a model ecological system involving ants, lycaenid butterflies, and host-plants. The project will reveal the nature of the chemical signals used to communicate, and their role in the origin, maintenance, and loss of mutualistic and parasitic associations.
Generalised Degrees of Freedom and Probabilistic Regularisation. This project intends to develop novel statistical tools for more accurate prediction by taking account of model complexity and uncertainties associated with the fitting procedure. The project also plans to develop a novel shrinkage approach via new penalty functions to avoid over-fitting and asymptotic properties. The key applications may include genetic studies where the number of predictors is large and biological experiments where multivariate and temporal data are often collected – for example economical breeding in animal and fish farming and more effectively detecting the genes of interest in genetic studies on human, animals and plants.Read moreRead less

This project aims to revolutionize our view of the microbial world once more by transforming microbiome studies from relative counts of organisms to actual numbers of microbes. This project expects to impact all the microbiome studies that are being performed worldwide by unveiling the actual numbers of microbes. Expected outcomes of this project include new techniques to enumerate the number of bacteria in different environments and new approaches to measure gene expression within individual bacteria in any environment that will be demonstrated with complex microbial communities. This should provide significant benefits because microbes affect every aspect of our lives and those effects are driven by how many microbes are present.Read moreRead less

Microplastics have become ubiquitous in our rivers, lakes and reservoirs, detrimentally impacting ecosystems. Via high-fidelity numerical simulations, the project aims to advance our understanding of the complex interplay between dispersed microplastics and key fluvial processes including turbulence, sediment transport and free-surface wave dynamics. The project intends to buildup a data-base containing high-resolution data of the occurrence, trajectories and distribution of microplastics. The outcome is anticipated to be invaluable in improving microplastic transport models, standardisation of sampling and quantification techniques, and in designing innovative mitigation technologies for microplastic collection.

This project aims to use new techniques in wireless neural recording to reveal how small neural networks process visual information to make fast, accurate decisions. The project is designed to generate new knowledge about biological solutions to contextual information processing and how tiny, simple biological neural systems control critical animal behaviours such as predator avoidance. Expected outcomes will be new biological insights with which to develop novel bio-inspired decision-making processing systems as required in small, autonomous robots. The anticipated benefits of this project will be advances in fundamental neuroscience and animal behaviour and is expected to provide significant value to a fast-developing industrial sector.Read moreRead less
