This information will provide the basis for tailoring treatment to a patients needs. It is anticipated that marketing of the PD GeneChip within Australia and overseas may produce revenue of at least $40 million annually.Read moreRead less
Increasing the utility of tetanus toxins by protein engineering. There are a variety of common diseases that are the result of muscular defects. Some of these may be able to be treated with an agent that increases muscle tone, thereby giving benefit to the patient in the alleviation of symptoms. This project aims to use some of the most potent substances known, bacterial toxins, and engineer them to be valuable agents for treatment of certain muscular disorders.
Identifying genes that influence clinical course and susceptibility in multiple sclerosis. This project aims to identify the genetic basis of multiple sclerosis (MS), the most common neurologic disease in young Australian adults. MS urgently needs research to identify predisposition, aid early diagnosis and provide bona fide molecular targets for new therapies. This will benefit people with MS and those susceptible to it. Crucial new knowledge identified will benefit other major areas of MS research including epidemiology, immunology and neurobiology. Collaboration of 8 major Australian institutions is also important for this project and future studies. The team will have access to a new national MS GeneBank (platform) with samples from 2240 patients that should generate findings important to world-wide MS genetic knowledge.Read moreRead less
New tools to activate and silence neural circuits. Many neurological disorders occur as a result of neuron cell death that is initiated by excessive levels of excitatory activity in central nervous system neurons. This project will develop and validate a new treatment for these disorders that involves silencing excessive neuronal activity using a safe, commonly prescribed drug.
A hands-free assistive control system for the severely disabled capable of operating under stressful and fatiguing conditions. The impact of severe disability like tetraplegia in daily living is substantial. Strategies are needed to improve their quality of life. One approach is to enhance their independence by providing 'hands free' control over their environment. However, few scientific studies have examined the efficacy of such technology. The impact of severe disability like tetraplegia in daily living is substantial. Strategies are needed to improve their quality of life. One approach is to enhance their independence by providing 'hands free' control over their environment. However, few scientific studies have examined the efficacy of such technology. The aim of this research is to study the brain activity of users of our "hands free" technology when they are operating under stressful and fatiguing conditions. The study should provide valuable data that will allow us to improve the efficacy of our existing brain signal based system (Mind Switch Assistive System). Read moreRead less
Participation following traumatic brain injury in rural, regional and remote areas. The results of this project will lead to improved rehabilitation programs and better outcomes for people with brain injury, especially in regional, rural and remote areas, by targeting the ultimate goal more directly: participation - getting people back into their home, work and community roles. Participation is associated with improved social networks, wellbeing, independence and quality of life, so health care ....Participation following traumatic brain injury in rural, regional and remote areas. The results of this project will lead to improved rehabilitation programs and better outcomes for people with brain injury, especially in regional, rural and remote areas, by targeting the ultimate goal more directly: participation - getting people back into their home, work and community roles. Participation is associated with improved social networks, wellbeing, independence and quality of life, so health care burdens and costs are reduced, and people can lead more productive lives. The project's emphasis on country areas will benefit rural health care, and also help specialist metropolitan brain injury services to understand the specific rehabilitation issues facing people from the bush.Read moreRead less
Regulation of neuronal cell death signalling for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and motor neuron diseases, are often underpinned by neuronal cell death-signalling. This project aims to characterise molecules that regulate cell death signalling, thereby increasing our knowledge of how neuronal cell death can be inhibited.
Biological probes for understanding mammalian cellular transport mechanisms. Cellular components are moved around within cells by molecular motors. This fundamental transport mechanism depends on a network of tracks. Blocks in this cellular transport can result in a number of mammalian diseases, particularly within nerve cells. This project will increase our understanding of the mechanisms of cellular transport and, in particular, how molecular motors engage their cargo. This is essential ground ....Biological probes for understanding mammalian cellular transport mechanisms. Cellular components are moved around within cells by molecular motors. This project will increase our understanding of the mechanisms of cellular transport and, in particular, how molecular motors engage their cargo. This is essential groundwork for the development of drugs that target this transport mechanism.Read moreRead less

This project will develop the theory and algorithms for reliable and robust prediction of the onset of epileptic seizures and the characterisation of epileptic seizures based on EEG data. Our interdisciplinary team consists of neuroscientists and systems engineers supported with clinicians and software developers. The team will develop the theory and design, implement and evaluate decision support software that is able to interpret eeg data and present epilepsy relevant information to clinicians and patients. Our methods are based on statistical signal processing, nonlinear dynamics (bifurcation and time-series methods) and systems engineering (system identification, adaptive methods).Read moreRead less
