This research project aims to unravel the highly complex mechanical behaviour of the extracellular matrix, and develop a whole new class of sophisticated and responsive extracellular matrix (ECM) materials. In any multicellular organism, the ECM provides cells with essential mechanical (such as strain stiffening) and biochemical support. The ECM is also critical for biological processes inside the cell, including proliferation, differentiation and migration. Exactly how the physical and chemical properties of ECMs on the outside of the cell modify the behaviour of a cell on the inside remains unclear. Outcomes would include a blueprint for synthetic ECMs, pushing the boundaries of materials development in the biological and life sciences.Read moreRead less

Fundamental high temperature e-waste investigations for high-value products. This project aims to transform toxic electronic waste (e-waste) into value added metals and alloys, simultaneously segregating hazardous constituents and preventing the generation of harmful emissions during processing. Huge stockpiles of this fast growing waste stream are creating a crisis of quantity as well as of toxic ingredients posing serious health and environmental problems. Using atomic-level simulations, rapid heating, high temperatures (1000-1600 C) and selective thermal transformations, this project aims to establish novel pathways for a controlled transformation of e-waste. Microrecycling fundamentals on high temperature transformations of metals, plastics and oxides and other micro-level phenomena will be established.Read moreRead less

This project aims to address the efficient and sustainable production of fuels and chemicals using abundant sources like water, carbon dioxide and sunlight by an integrated reaction system. Through understanding molecular design principles and material engineering, this project expects to develop a range of novel electrocatalysts featuring high activity, efficiency, selectivity and stability for carbon dioxide reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions. These new catalysts will facilitate a hybrid reaction cell as artificial leaf mimics by associating photocatalysis and electrocatalysis processes. The expected outcome of this project is of great importance for solar fuel generation and carbon dioxide utilisation, which are the key energy and environmental challenges facing Australia and the world today. This will provide benefits such as an innovative system of solar energy transformation that will lead to the production of fuels and key chemicals in an efficient, selective and sustainable form, ultimately bringing environmental benefits through much smaller greenhouse gas emissions.Read moreRead less
