Afghanistan and Central Asia: regional security dynamics in a new strategic environment. This project explores the security dynamics between Afghanistan and its neighbours in Central Asia. It provides new insights into how these neighbours; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan manage threats and tensions in the region especially after NATO's substantial combat withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Benefiting from injustice. This project argues that people can acquire duties to compensate victims of injustice when they benefit from these injustices, even when they neither caused the injustices nor could have prevented them. We explore the implications of this argument for the treatment of colonised peoples, and for policies on climate change and international trade.
Drugs, books and seeds: The politics of access to intellectual property. The project aims to compare three transnational campaigns to increase access to drugs (patents and data protection), books (copyright) and seeds (plant variety protection and patents). It expects to generate new knowledge in intellectual property regulation and global governance through an interdisciplinary approach combining concepts from political science, law, and sociology. This project interrogates how international criminal law can reshape state-society relations in periods of transition after conflict or repressive rule. Since late 2011, socio-political and legal change has swept across the Middle East and North Africa, requiring us to understand the role that various forms of national and international law can play in redressing past wrongs. Gender after conflict: a gendered analysis of the international community's engagement in post-conflict zones. Efforts by the international community to transition post-conflict societies into peaceful democracies can be fraught with complex politics. This project seeks to examine the role that the international community's ideas and policies about gender have on the failures and successes of this transition.

While the frequency of violence has remained almost constant for decades, researchers are only beginning to explore comparatively the myriad causes of election violence and what can be done to prevent it.
