This project will design and test innovative new decentralised algorithms for responding to spatiotemporal queries in environmental monitoring networks. The research is essential for constructing larger, denser, and more reliable networks, helping to embed spatial intelligence within the environment itself (ambient spatial intelligence). The project builds on Australia's existing research excellence in geographic information science. By making smarter use of spatial information, the project will further strengthen Australia's world-leading spatial information industry, and support sustainable and economic environmental management through important applications like conservation contracts and carbon sequestration monitoring.Read moreRead less
The Responsibilities of the Affluent to Address Global Poverty. Australia is a wealthy country surrounded by less developed countries. This project will serve as a guide to a morally defensible Australian foreign policy and in particular as an aid for policy makers working on foreign assistance, international trade, and environmental policy. This project will serve as a guide to a morally defensible Australian foreign policy and in particular as an aid for policy makers working on foreign assistance, international trade, and environmental policy. It is important to observe that in order to safeguard Australian national security it is prudent to address the issue of global poverty. Although terrorists and other threats seem seldom to be motivated by considerations of fairness, sympathy with and support for their actions seems often rooted in the perception that they are acting on behalf of the poor and impoverished.Read moreRead less

This project furthers the National Research Priority of An Environmentally Sustainable Australia, particularly the subsidiary goal of meeting Australia's Kyoto targets. The project will recommend ways of improving the integration of international trade and environmental regimes to enable the Australian government to tackle national environmental problems and risks, such as climate change, and encourage the "greening" of Australian industry without fear of retaliatory trade sanctions or unfair competitive advantages accruing to other nations. Successful national environmental policies, particularly in the complex area of climate change, are dependent upon the integration of environmental and economic policies at the international level.Read moreRead less
Clarifying transparency: Chinese aid and trade in Latin America. Consensual understandings of transparency and good governance are crucial to the international accommodation of China's economic rise. Through a quantitative survey and qualitative case studies, this project aims to clarify how these terms generate misunderstandings and hinder potential for dialogue between key U.S., Latin American and Chinese actors.
China's Industrialisation and Demand for Energy and Minerals. Understanding China's medium and long-term growth prospects and the implications for both demand and supply of resources are critically important to Australian economic policy and performance, as well as to investment decisions of Australian resource producers, and professional decisions of Australians in a wide range of occupations. Analysis of the medium and long-term demand for resources from China would be beneficial for Australia ....China's Industrialisation and Demand for Energy and Minerals. Analysis of the medium and long-term demand for resources from China would be beneficial for Australian resource industries. It is also important to Australian budget, education and infrastructure policy. Increasing Chinese demand for resources will be critical in shaping global environmental policies.Read moreRead less

The advanced DNA identification and forensics facility:
The project aims to establish a national integrated facility for cutting-edge forensic genetic research, resources and expertise in wildlife, forest and environmental DNA identification to improve our capacity to identify unknown biological material. The project’s goal will be to enhance synergies between academic research, service delivery and forensic application of DNA identification technologies, addressing vital questions such as: From which individual or species did this material originate? Where in the world is it from? Is it legal? The proposed facility may deliver applied outcomes for government, the criminal justice system, and industry, such as improved pest and threatened species identification; biosecurity, prosecutions of wildlife crime and illegal logging; and missing person and disaster victim identification.Read moreRead less

In an era of growing international integration, the measurement of aggregate gains from globalization and their distribution is a major policy concern. While it is natural to think of policy makers as designing policy in response to the distribution of income, the fact that firms may also want to exploit the same information has received less attention. This omission is important since firms routinely utilise such information when designing products and setting prices, resulting in very different welfare outcomes across income groups. This project develops a framework that incorporates this aspect of firm behaviour to re-evaluate the implications of globalization, especially how it affects the distribution of gains and losses. ASEAN+3 Free Trade Agreement and Its Impact on Australia-Vietnam Trade. The ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and Korea) free trade agreement endorsed by ASEAN Leaders in 2001 poses a serious trade diversion threat to Australia's goods and services trade to ASEAN and North Asia (reaching $33.9b and $85.0b respectively in 2001, see DFAT 2003). No research on this has been done or reported. No research on this has been done or reported. The project, with Vietnam Institute for Trade collaboration, uses new analytical and empirical approaches to investigate this FTA and its implications to Australia's trade to a major ASEAN country, namely Vietnam, where 2002 trade reached $2.8b and Australia's global companies (eg. ANZ, Telstra, RMIT) currently have large operation.Read moreRead less

International trade and investment treaties contain overlapping provisions that have been subject to divergent interpretations by tribunals settling associated disputes. Proliferation of such treaties has created conflicting obligations, significant uncertainty for states and businesses, and an increasing potential for government liability. Through a comparative study of targeted countries, legal concepts and sectors, this project reconceptualises the fields of international trade and investment law in order to maximise their coherence. By providing a framework for reform of existing treaties and negotiation of future treaties, the project offers concrete benefits for government and industry through increased consistency and predictability.Read moreRead less
'Sea change' communities: inter-generational perception and sense of place. The aim of this research is to establish a more rigorous method of evaluating the impact of the sea change process on the built and natural environments of coastal settlements. It will assist those communities to implement effective, place-sensitive sustainable planning and associated development practices.
