The Changing Rights to Family Life in Australia: Biomedicine and Legal Governance in Globalisation. This project investigates the impact of globalisation and biomedicine on the constitution of family through a cultural study of legal processes. It compares two contrasting and currently contested cases in Australia (transnational surrogacy arrangements and family reunification in immigration) to study the biomedicalisation of parenthood, the role of reproduction in border politics and legal trans ....The Changing Rights to Family Life in Australia: Biomedicine and Legal Governance in Globalisation. This project investigates the impact of globalisation and biomedicine on the constitution of family through a cultural study of legal processes. It compares two contrasting and currently contested cases in Australia (transnational surrogacy arrangements and family reunification in immigration) to study the biomedicalisation of parenthood, the role of reproduction in border politics and legal transformations in governing 'family life'. Family, violence and honour: the Walworth Murder. Australian statistics confirm that violence within the family is an intractable problem. Real-life narratives of spousal abuse and murder, including historical cases, provide compelling evidence of the causes and costs of family conflict. This project underlines the ways in which power asymmetries within families can become risk factors for violence.
Unlocking the learning potential of incarcerated and low SES young people. This project aims to address the gap between incarcerated young people's (10-17 years) education and their future education, training and employment opportunities. Indigenous and low SES people young people face a lower quality of life in the areas of education, health and employment, and are at risk of both offending and re-offending because of low educational outcomes and life expectations. Narrating trauma and displacement: historical and cultural experiences of Iran-born men in Australia. This project aims to understand the trauma facing Iranian men who have settled in Australia in the last 30 years, and to contribute to programs for their recovery and care. It provides the first social, cultural and historical study of this phenomenon, and aims to strengthen social cohesion by promoting new knowledge about refugees and migrants.
Building Difference: Architectural Strategies in Colonial Museums. Natural history and ethnology museums built in the 19th century in British imperial territories in Australia, New Zealand, India, and Canada were driven by specific colonising intent. The project offers a new perspective on gender and colonial history by examining crossborder movements and networks of women and men in and beyond East Asia in the early to mid-twentieth century. It focuses on Korea, which had the distinctive experience of being colonised by Japan, a non-Western colonial power. A cultural history of West Australian popular music, 1945 to 2010. The Valentines, The Triffids, The John Butler Trio all had their origins in the western Australian musical scene. This is the first cultural history of West Australia's popular music industry. It documents the life and times of its musical artists, bands, managers, recording studios, relevant radio programs since 1945.
Global/Local Intersections: History, Identity and Community in a Tokyo Subculture. The human rights of minorities are gaining increased attention in Australia and the region. It is important for our understanding of the region that we are informed about the development of minority gender identities in an Asian context from both human rights and health perspectives. The project will contribute to the national research priority of understanding Australia's place in the region through building link ....Global/Local Intersections: History, Identity and Community in a Tokyo Subculture.
