The origins of modern Australian systems of justice are derived from institutions and cultures developed in Britain, and this project will contribute a deeper understanding of their nature and provenance. It will illuminate the roots of the modern trial as an instrument of governance that involves largely symbolic, rather than substantive, popular participation, and trace its equally significant role as a form of popular entertainment. Besides their obvious relevance to questions about active citizenship in modern Australia, scholarly studies of these issues will contribute in a major way to Australia's international reputation for producing high-quality scholarly contributions to British studies.Read moreRead less

This facility will enable researchers to obtain high-resolution geochemical profiles in the study of environmental change and climate variability. It will provide archive data on the variation of density and chemical element composition along sediment and soil cores, rock cores, wood samples, speleothems and corals. These archives contain important information such as human activity, climate variability, water quality changes, pollution histories, recent geomorphological change, land-use change, introduction of invasive species and the occurrence of bushfires. A better understanding of the occurrence and timing of these major environmental issues is of national and regional importance.Read moreRead less

Biodiversity research is strong in Australia but is highly uncoordinated and, along with recent major breakthroughs in both theory and techniques, has highlighted the need for a Network to properly integrate research and focus it on the most appropriate scale. This Network aims to bring together a diverse spectrum of highly experienced and early career researchers to pool their ideas and expertise to allow them to determine how best to describe Australia's current biodiversity and the biological and environmental history leading up to the present. A major outcome will be the ability to predict the impacts of environmental change on biodiversity to assist management decisions across Australia, with lessons of global importance.Read moreRead less
Intimacy and Violence in Anglo Pacific Rim settler colonial societies. Violence and intimacy were both fundamental to the formation of settler colonial societies, yet we know surprisingly little of how they were connected. Through a large-scale collaboration of leading scholars, this project aims to produce the first transnational analysis of intimacy and violence as key, intertwined vectors in the development of settler societies across the colonial Anglophone Pacific Rim. Drawing out connections between the broad-scale dynamics of colonial rule and the violent and intimate domains of its implementation on the ground, the project aims to generate new comparative insights into the development of colonial settler cultures and create enhanced understanding of their legacies for western settler democracies today.Read moreRead less

Understanding Persistent Organic Pollutant Behaviour in Dynamic Polar Environments. Polar regions are environmental ‘sinks’ for man-made, Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The unique biogeochemical processes governing POP behaviour in the Polar landscape are not understood, yet are necessary to predict their impact in polar ecosystems. The Antarctic seasonal-ice zone provides an archetype for multi-compartment, temporal observations of POP partitioning in response to the major drivers of ice cover and primary productivity. In addition, the major Antarctic POP reservoirs of seawater and ice will be characterised. Empirical data will be used to parameterise a regional fugacity model. Model application to varying climate scenarios will extend our understanding of POP behaviour and threat in polar regions.Read moreRead less
