As Australia is the first and only country to implement a free universal school based male human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program (in 2013), this project has the unique opportunity to be first to study to assess the effectiveness of the male HPV vaccination program in Australia by measuring a change in the prevalence of HPV among young (aged 17-20) heterosexual and homosexual men following the implementation of the vaccination program.

ñAntiviral drug-associated vaccine escape mutantsî have the potential to jeopardize the hepatitis B immunization program. Which particular viral mutations or combination of mutations that can directly affect the clinical outcome of infection, especially in the context of vaccine induced immunity, are not known. In this study we will identify the clinical sequelae and public health consequences arising from the selection of these mutants.

Despite the bacteria, the pneumococcus, being the most common reason why children die from pneumonia worldwide, the uptake of pneumococcal vaccine to prevent this disease has been slow, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. I will work with Pacific governments, the Asia Development Bank Bank, UNICEF and other regional organisations, and health economists to lead the design of the implementation plan of PCV into Pacific island countries.

Summary
Pneumococcal disease is a major cause of pneumonia and meningitis in infants in developing countries in particular resulting in an estimated 800,000 deaths each year. This project will study how well pneumococcal vaccines perform in 260 high-risk infants in Papua New Guinea. We will examine how well the vaccines stimulate protective immunity and reduce babies carrying the pneumococcal bacteria in their nose and how long this immunity lasts for. The study will inform global immunisation policy.

We plan a study where Indigenous pregnant women will be immunised with a licensed vaccine to determine if it prevents acute lung infections in their children. A randomised design will be used based on our previous work. We will also undertake 2 novel sub-studies on infant immune function and reasons why women refuse immunisation. If successful, this study will alter immunisation policy and prevent lung infections and future chronic lung diseases that are common in Indigenous children and adults.

Summary
Potent vaccination might be achieved by using monoclonal antibodies as magic bullets to target vaccines to special cells in the body. We show that targeting these special cells by using monoclonal antibodies that recognise Clec9A is effective, perhaps because it brings several different immune cells together so that they orchestrate very efficient immune responses. This application investigates how targeting Clec9A allows strong vaccination so that we can apply this to new generation vaccines.

This research will develop a spatial simulation model to predict the spread of pandemic influenza within Australia. The resulting software program will be readily usable by disease managers, both during and prior to an outbreak, to predict the effect of various containment measures on the size, rate and location of disease spread, through a city, state or the nation. Deployed in _real time� after an outbreak has started in Australia, it will be used to predict infection spread and the containmen ....This research will develop a spatial simulation model to predict the spread of pandemic influenza within Australia. Deployed in _real time� after an outbreak has started in Australia, it will be used to predict infection spread and the containment effect of a range of interventions. The model would use data obtained during initial stages of the outbreak to refine the model, so allowing accuracy in daily spread prediction; similar use of spatial models occurred during the 2001 Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the UK. In a pre-pandemic period the simulation model will be available to predict the containment effect of a range of response measures, such as travel restrictions, workplace and school closures, vaccination and antiviral usage. This project aims to come up with a vaccination schedule to make pneumococcal vaccines more effective and affordable for Fiji and other developing countries. We will evaluate schedules involving a 2 dose primary series in early infancy with a booster at 9 months of age. We will compare the immune responses to 3 different primary series and 2 booster options. The results of this project will be used to provide advice, at global and country levels, regarding introduction of pneumococcal vaccines.
