Summary
Severe infections are characterised by a profound drop in blood pressure, which starve vital organs of oxygen and nutrients, this septic shock can lead to organ failure and death. We aim to identify dysfunction of the molecular signals in blood vessels, which leads to the failure of these vessels to maintain adequate blood pressure. Currently in Australia asthma prevalence is high compared with other countries, affecting 10%–12% of adults and 14%–16% of children. This project will determine the contribution of mast cells to the altered function of airway smooth muscle cells and identify how non asthmatic airway smooth muscle inhibits mast cell localisation to it. The findings will provide new targets for asthma therapies and a pathway for prevention strategies, which up until now have been unsuccessful.
The Role Of Tissue Factor Pathway Inhibitor (TFPI) In The Pathogenesis Of Lymphatic Malformations

Funding Amount
$87,198.00
Summary
Lymphatic malformations or cystic hygomas are growths of abnormal blood vessels called 'lymphatic vessels'. They are present at birth, commonly affect the head and neck, and can cause lifelong problems due to growth in size and frequent infections. Surgical treatment does not offer a cure, and problems often persist lifelong. The finding that blood clots are continuously forming and breaking down in these growths may provide a clue to relieving symptoms and understanding the cause of this condit ....Lymphatic malformations or cystic hygomas are growths of abnormal blood vessels called 'lymphatic vessels'. Nutrient-training Interactions In Human Skeletal Muscle
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$53,659.00
Summary
Skeletal muscle accounts for 50% of total body mass with critical roles in body movement and blood glucose regulation. Exercise is a potent stimulus for maintaining/ increasing muscle mass, an effect that is augmented when combined with protein ingestion. The aims of this proposal are to better understand this exercise-nutrient interaction to optimize the prescription of programs and recovery strategies as a countermeasure for muscle degeneration with aging and disease.
Morphological And Mechanical Properties Of Normal And Spastic Muscle In Children
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$91,749.00
Summary
Examining muscle structure and function assists in understanding movement. This research will develop non-invasive ultrasound imaging techniques allowing muscle fibre visualisation and assessment of muscle properties during passive length changes and active force production. We will compare structure and function of spastic muscle in children with cerebral palsy and typically developing muscle. The effects of Botox injections on spastic muscle properties will also be investigated.
