Improving the diagnosis, management and control of chlamydial infections in Australian livestock. Chlamydial diseases, such as arthritis and encephalomyelitis, are associated with significant economic losses for Australian livestock producers. Effective surveillance and management of Chlamydia infections is problematic due to: the absence of epidemiological data; the lack of an accurate and easily interpretable diagnostic test; and the lack of an available vaccine. This project aims to evaluate factors associated with chlamydial disease in Australian livestock and thereby improve on-farm diagnosis. With the concomitant development of a chlamydial vaccine for sheep, this project aims to provide veterinarians and producers with important tools to reduce the on-farm impacts of chlamydial disease.Read moreRead less

Australia hosts many geological locations that have the potential for geothermal energy production. This is a sustainable power resource and employs diverse technological approaches depending on local conditions. We aim to pilot a new seismic imaging method, which could become a standard in geothermal exploration around the world, to investigate natural heat sources buried in the crust. Tasmania is an ideal pilot location with active geothermal exploration tenements held by a locally-based company.Read moreRead less

Viscous Effects in Free-Surface Flows. Australia has a proud record of achievement in the field of free-surface fluid mechanics. This project will build and extend these research achievements. It will provide new information about how fluid layers overturn and mix, which is an important process in oceanography. It will examine the sloshing behaviour of fluid in moving storage tanks, which is important in fuel transport and building design. The project will develop new mathematical methods fo ....Viscous Effects in Free-Surface Flows. Australia has a proud record of achievement in the field of free-surface fluid mechanics. It will examine the sloshing behaviour of fluid in moving storage tanks, which is important in fuel transport and building design. The project will develop new mathematical methods for solving these problems accurately, and will contribute to the next generation of research mathematicians in Australia. Read moreRead less
Microreactors for Organic Synthesis. Since the electronic revolution, miniaturisation has been the trend for devices from consumer electronics to scientific instruments. Since the electronic revolution, miniaturisation has been the trend for devices from consumer electronics to scientific instruments. In this time very little has changed in the manner, or scale, that synthetic organic chemistry has been carried out even though advances in instrumentation mean that less compound is required for identification and analysis. This project aims to bridge the gap by developing recyclable miniaturised reaction vessels for the formation of organic compounds on a scale thousands of times smaller than it is currently done. These devices will have applications in drug discovery programmes due to higher throughput and increased efficiency while minimising waste.Read moreRead less

This project aims to establish an industry-linked pipeline for vaccines to be delivered to animals in edible baits and a near real-time monitoring system for assessing the impact of management actions. This project will develop ultrasensitive diagnostic tests and incorporate biomarkers into baits from Australia's leading pest animal control company. Bait uptake and disease status in the field will be monitored using artificial intelligence technology developed in Tasmania. This integrated wildlife health intelligence and scalable vaccine platform can help protect the iconic Tasmanian devil from disease and increase Australia's preparedness for looming threats to the livestock industry such as African swine fever.Read moreRead less
Development of an amoebic gill disease vaccine to protect Atlantic salmon. This project aims to identify candidate vaccine antigens and produce an experimental vaccine against amoebic gill disease (AGD) that will benefit the Tasmanian and international Atlantic salmon aquaculture industries. This project aims to identify candidate vaccine antigens and produce an experimental vaccine against amoebic gill disease (AGD) that will benefit the Tasmanian and international Atlantic salmon aquaculture industries. AGD is the most significant health problem affecting Atlantic salmon aquaculture in Tasmania. In the last decade, AGD has become a legitimate health threat to the multibillion dollar global Atlantic salmon industry. A solution is needed before AGD fully establishes itself in the largest Atlantic salmon producing nations. The expected outcome of this project is the development of a commercial vaccine that should significantly benefit the Australian and international aquaculture industries. Read moreRead less

This project will develop three unique chemical approaches that will each overcome a challenge to the creation of advanced miniaturised analytical devices with sample-in/answer-out capability. This will provide substantial improvements in speed, cost, portability, and operational simplicity and safety. New technology for analysing drugs in body fluids will be critical to enabling people to closely match their pharmaceutical consumption with their individual requirements. The advance will have implications for all patients, particularly those in remote and rural Australian populations. The same technology is likely to find applications in environmental monitoring of emerging pharmaceutical pollutants. Read moreRead less
