The economic and social consequences of illicit drug markets. This project aims to understand the economic and social effects of illicit drugs. This project aims to understand the economic and social effects of illicit drugs. An estimated one-quarter of a billion people use illicit drugs each year. This causes major health and personal problems, while the violence and organised crime associated with illicit drug markets affect society. This project will apply econometric techniques to administrative and survey data to establish the long-term causal effects of illicit drug markets on crime, health, education and employment. The results are expected to show how illicit drug policies can improve health and well-being in communities.Read moreRead less
What women want: unravelling the factors underlying women's financial decision-making behaviour. By the time women retire, they are generally worse off financially than men. This national study will be the first to measure the impact of underlying factors that explain rather than describe the financial decision-making behaviour of women, and how financial decision-making and economic outcomes for women might be improved.
Super Financial Security: Improving Flexibility, Trust and Communication. This project aims to address the significant worldwide challenge of how to safeguard financial wellbeing at older ages. In doing so it aims to investigate three important and interconnected influences on retirement preparation: flexible choice architecture, trust formation and effective communication. The project aims to use a combination of innovative modelling, experimental and field-based approaches. The principal expected outcomes are insights into the factors that guide superannuation choice, build trust with superannuation providers, and ensure clear and effective communication with members.Read moreRead less
A New framework to improve human-robot interaction in financial markets. This project aims to investigate the interaction of humans with robots (automated, algorithmic traders) in financial markets. It will build a novel environment based on controlled experiments within the context of financial markets. This project aims to investigate the interaction of humans with robots (automated, algorithmic traders) in financial markets. It will build a novel environment based on controlled experiments within the context of financial markets. It is expected to discover how market participants choose to engage robots, and when and why robots are disengaged. The project will also investigate how the use of robots affects price behaviour, and efficiency of allocation. This will provide significant benefits, such as enhancing Australia’s capacity for the scientific study of financial markets and for developing financial technology using an experimental method.Read moreRead less
Understanding, measuring and managing the benefits of urban waterways. This project aims to improve understanding of the contribution of urban waterways to enhanced liveability in cities. Australia needs better water resource management and the rapid growth of Australia’s cities places increased importance on managing natural assets in metropolitan areas. This project aims to improve understanding of the contribution of urban waterways to enhanced liveability in cities. Australia needs better water resource management and the rapid growth of Australia’s cities places increased importance on managing natural assets in metropolitan areas. The project focuses on clarifying the link between the benefits of waterways and the measurement techniques used by economists, which in turn inform management choices. The project aims to fill an important gap between the psychology and economics disciplines and outputs should significantly improve the way waterways are valued and managed. This is intended to offer benefits for urban residents and to improve the methodologies used for environmental valuation.Read moreRead less
Combining hydrological information with a multi-regional, computable general equilibrium model. The model to be created will combine a unique amount of economic detail at the statistical division level with hydrological detail. The model to be created will combine a unique amount of economic detail at the statistical division level with hydrological detail. Users will obtain better estimates than previously available on the regional and industrial impacts of different water scenarios. This will produce economic and social returns to the community through improved water policies in the following areas: urban-rural water allocation; climate change impact assessment; water reform and water trading; and the economic impacts of meeting environmental objectives. The model will thus provide a path-breaking tool for examining issues arising from COAG reforms and broader policy goals. Read moreRead less
Gross credit flows, credit reallocation, and the macroeconomy. This project aims to construct measures of credit reallocation from regulatory bank-level data for Australia and other countries. The project intends to develop empirical models able to evaluate the role of credit reallocation on aggregate output and a theoretical model with search and match frictions to evaluate quantitatively the role of bank credit in explaining macroeconomic outcomes. The project expects to provide significant benefits for policymakers for assessing the interplay between monetary and credit policy, formulating macroeconomic and macro prudential policies, and shedding light on the causes of productivity dynamics in Australia, boosting its comparative advantage.Read moreRead less
Water derivatives: conceptualisation, price modelling and economic impacts. Introducing water options is likely to provide farmers with more choices on trading their water allocation and enhance water price certainty. Recent seasons have accentuated the potential benefit of water options: regions with highly secure water in the past have suffered repeated shortfalls in allocations. Water options would alter the behaviour of water managers who would need to ensure sufficient carryover to future seasons to allow for drought. Options markets may improve the allocation of water between competing users. Such markets, by reducing uncertainty, may reduce excessive adjustment costs arising from drought by improving water access security.Read moreRead less
Measuring the Commercial Real Estate Sector in Australia. This project aims to address a significant gap in our understanding of the Australian commercial real estate sector. It will use detailed data to develop sophisticated models of the prices of commercial buildings. Expected outcomes include a suite of commercial real estate price indexes for Australia, by region and property type, and a comprehensive and transparent examination of the methods used to construct them. This will shed light on ....Measuring the Commercial Real Estate Sector in Australia. This will shed light on a hitherto poorly measured sector and provide significant benefits by better informing market participants, guiding statistical agencies in developing such measures and better-enabling policymakers, banks, superfunds and macroprudential authorities to understand the risk profile of the sector.Read moreRead less
Understanding and preventing workforce vulnerabilities in midlife and beyond. This project brings together frontline service agencies with researchers from two universities to study involuntary non-participation and under-participation in the labour market by midlife Australians. Quantitative and qualitative approaches will be used to understand pathways and outcomes so as to inform policy and practice responses.
