This project aims to document, preserve and investigate a new history of Australian comics and graphic novels created 1980 to 2020. This period represents a significant shift in the thematic content and material production of comics. In tracing the development of technologies and communities, this project expects to generate new knowledge about narrative innovations comics use to reflect diverse national identities and cultures in Australian society. By consolidating and providing public access to a wealth of contemporary Australian comics through a website and public programs, this project should feed the future of Australian comics industry and scholarship, providing significant benefit to Australian artists, readers, and the public.Read moreRead less
Ethics and aesthetics as criteria for innovation: A design research study of biological art and digital architecture. The project will contribute to the goal of promoting innovation in three areas. First, the project will amplify Australia's individual strengths in biological art and digital architecture by creating a network of artists and designers in which each discipline is stimulated by the concerns and practices of the other. The project will contribute to the goal of promoting innovation in three areas. First, the project will amplify Australia's individual strengths in biological art and digital architecture by creating a network of artists and designers in which each discipline is stimulated by the concerns and practices of the other. Second, the project will explain innovation in such networks, by identifying activities that lead to innovation. Such an explanation will improve the nation's capacity to promote innovation in targeted fields. Third, the project will test and develop collaboration tools designed to support the activities identified as leading to innovation, as information technology is a primary enabler for operating across such networks.

The impact of location-specific urban digital social information networks and public displays on the City of Melbourne. The purpose of this project is to enhance the city as a vibrant destination by taking digital content and anchoring it in the physical world. The outcomes will be physical nodes of interaction in urban cultural hubs - e.g., museums, libraries, cafes - allowing users to post media, stories and events that are locally relevant for others to consume.
Ontology-based collaboration in design. The design process of a building project establishes function, form and performance for the final building. When multiple participants from varying professions are involved there is a serious problem in coordinating, communicating, and locating information around each design decision. The design process of a building project establishes function, form and performance for the final building. When multiple participants from varying professions are involved there is a serious problem in coordinating, communicating, and locating information around each design decision. Establishing an ontology for this process, and using this ontology to structure all participant communication, will allow the requisite information from all participants to be considered for each design decision. This will greatly reduce rework and poor design decisions based on missed information. It will also ensure that participants are aware of all related information for their particular design tasks.Read moreRead less
Delivering Digital Architecture in Australia. While Australian architects, engineers, manufacturers, fabricators, and constructors have participated in a few such projects using these technologies, generally, local understanding and uptake of the opportunities is still very low. Growth in this area means growth in an existing export rather than increasing reliance on importing these services and products. More fundamentally, it means a huge cultural dividend to Australia from greater affordable freedom of architectural expression.Read moreRead less

This project aims to design age friendly dwellings and neighbourhoods that embrace the reality of millions of older Australians ageing in their homes in the community. Using architectural design-practice research methods that focus on a carefully curated series of design propositions, this project aims to explore how the dwelling and its urban environment can be ‘normalised’ for the growing ageing population through adjustments that make it more adaptable and responsive to their needs, while at the same time improving the city for all. The project aims to pose the following question: what design strategies can be employed to integrate more flexible, affordable and personalised living options that enable older people to continue living and participating within existing urban communities?Read moreRead less

In collaboration with Film Australia and award winning eLearning company Crank Media, researchers will prototype next-generation broadband learning tools that continually assess and respond to an individual user's knowledge gaps, and enable access to digital resources derived from personal learning styles and preferences. Underpinned by distributed learning theory and working with ?rich task? activities within a content aggregation scaffolding the research will design and field test innovative online study and revision activities. It will engage learners in recognizing and switching their learning paradigms appropriately, and in articulating these decisions through dynamic content pathways utilizing Film Australia's invaluable archives.Read moreRead less

The construction industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy. Each year billions of dollars are spent erecting new high rise buildings. Further, Australian engineering firms bid on major construction projects throughout the world, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. The research described here promises to deliver economies to the Australian construction industry as well as equipping local firms involved in structural design to better compete for offshore work .
Community benefits will take the form of reduced construction costs and the capacity for a more complete and up to date knowledge of the structural performance and risk of aging assets, thereby increasing community confidence and safety.Read moreRead less

Improved collaboration between the diverse contributors to design in the construction industry is urgently needed to reduce waste, streamline production and improve performance. It is also a key to better and more advanced design. The quality of human to human interaction in computer mediated environments is critical to the occurrence of innovation between design disciplines. This project will create a pool of highly qualified personnel in this area in Australia, including participating designers introduced to novel empowering approaches to network communication. It will develop and apply knowledge from other disciplines to developing tools for the design community. Read moreRead less
