Summary
Low-complexity factor-graph-based receiver design for bandwidth-efficient communication systems over doubly selective channels. This project aims to solve challenging problems in future wireless communications using graph-based signal processing techniques. It will provide practical solutions for future broadband mobile communications to the bush and high-speed underwater acoustic communications in the oceans that are particularly important to Australia.
Blind separation of mutually correlated sources. This project is aimed at developing novel techniques for blind separation of mutually correlated sources. The expected outcomes will significantly advance the theory of blind source separation and improve the performance of important practical systems, such as densely deployed sensor networks and wireless video surveillance systems.

Multi-rate signal processing is gaining more and more importance in signal processing applications such as echo cancellation, microphone arrays, speech enhancement and equalisation. This project is aimed at obtaining high performance and high efficiency multi-rate processing designs by developing appropriate problem formulations based on solid mathematical foundations so that powerful optimisation techniques can be applied. The developed multi-rate systems will result in low complexity and low power hardware implementations without significant compromise in performance in each application. Size and cost sensitive of communication devices such as personal data assistants, mobile telephones, hands-free devices, and laptops will benefit greatly from the outcome of the project.Read moreRead less

as earplugs and earmuffs inhibit face-to-face communications. Sensear
has developed and marketed a world-first product that, apart from overcoming the aforesaid limitation, also gives the wearer a perception of his surrounding sound field. This project seeks to extend Sensear's products to include compensation for people with hearing loss. This will give Sensear a competitive edge in hearing protection products, and enhance Australia's reputation in assistive hearing technology. The project also presents a number of opportunities to provide
industry-focussed research training to PhD students.Read moreRead less

High-speed underwater communication is vitally important for Australian offshore oil and gas industries, marine commercial operations, and defence applications. However, due to the challenges posed by the harsh underwater channel, current underwater communication systems have significant limitations on data rate and bit-error-rate for many applications and environments. This project aims to develop a real-time signal processing platform for reliable high-speed communication through the extremely bandlimited and reverberant underwater acoustic channel. New channel estimation, tracking and equalisation algorithms developed in this project will significantly enhance the capacity of underwater communication systems.Read moreRead less
Increasing the range and rate of underwater acoustic communication systems using multi-hop relay. Australia has a very long coastline, thus it is vitally important for Australia to efficiently explore and exploit the rich resources in the ocean. This project develops novel communication technologies for long-range and high-rate underwater acoustic communications that are crucial to Australian ocean-related industries and defence applications.

100 Gbit to 1 Terabit per second optical communication test bed facility. This facility will develop and demonstrate novel optical technologies that will underpin the generation and transmission of a higher-speed Ethernet at 100 Gb/s to 1Terabit/s, and will lead to better broadband and more energy efficient internet. At the foundation of this research will be a test bed with multiple signal sources at data rates above 50 Gbaud.
WAVE TRAPPING BARRIERS. Traditional noise barriers have poor performance when installed as parallel barriers in front of noise sources with large reflection surfaces. Traditional noise barriers have poor performance when installed as parallel barriers in front of noise sources with large reflection surfaces. This is because that the reflected noise from the far side barrier or from the source surfaces contributes significantly to the noise level at the receiver location. This project involves the investigation of a novel barrier, the wave trapping barrier (WTB), which is capable of retaining the noise between the source and the barrier and to provide maximum sound absorption at the frequencies of concern, and thus to minimize the contribution due to the reflection. The aim is to develop a theoretical and experimental model for the physical understanding and optimal design of the WTB. Outcomes include a new generation of noise barriers that are potentially light-weighted, fiberless and with higher insertion loss.Read moreRead less
