This project can deliver advanced technology for fabricating ceramic membranes and biological separation, which has considerable commercial prospects in the chemical, pharmaceutical, dairy, food and water industries. The new ceramic membrane and nanofibres are highly-valued end products of metal oxides, which are manufactured commercially on large scale in Australia. The project could bring direct benefits to the existing industries, by fostering their growth into more value-added processes, and exporting highly-valued products abroad. Additionally, efficient ceramic membranes could offer solutions to the large-scale purification of biological substances and to the problems for providing clean drinking water.Read moreRead less

The Research Network for Engineering a Secure Australia (RNESA) is a multi-disciplinary collaboration established to strengthen Australia's science and technology capacity for protecting the Nation's critical infrastructure from natural or human-caused disasters. RNESA will facilitate a knowledge sharing network for government, universities and the private sector to produce innovative engineering solutions to the emerging security problems relating to the safety of critical infrastructure. This initiative will draw together researchers across disciplines to identify a roadmap for future R&D in this area. RNESA's final outcomes will lead to multi-hazard mitigation strategies and a real-time crisis support network to enable the nation to manage potential disasters.Read moreRead less
Emergency Control of Catastrophic Disturbances in a Power System. Following the tragic events of 11 September 2001, there are increased concerns about the security and robustness of power systems to evolving spectra of threats, such as natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes and hurricanes), equipment failure, human error, or deliberate sabotage and attack by terrorists. Following the tragic events of 11 September 2001, there are increased concerns about the security and robustness of power systems to evolving spectra of threats, such as natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes and hurricanes), equipment failure, human error, or deliberate sabotage and attack by terrorists. In this project, pattern recognition of local parameter changes in distributed monitoring systems will be used to identify any threatened breakdown in the power system. Once identified, methods based on intelligent agents will be used to trigger the appropriate countermeasures to maintain the integrity of transmission grids.Read moreRead less
Situated Design Computing: A New Paradigm to Support Design Using Situated Reasoning. A country like Australia with its twin disadvantages of distance from its large markets and small population as its own market has to found its goals in its wealth production on its ability to compete at the high value-adding loci of the economy. Design is a precursor to superior products and is one of the nation's high value-adding wealth generating activities. This project aims to lay the foundations for a new class of design support tools that have the capacity to be used at a variety of stages in the design process including those stages where major decisions are being taken. This will have the potential to improve the efficacy and the efficiency of Australian design and hence make it more globally competitive.Read moreRead less
Could porous pavements be a part of the urban water solution? With water demand in Australia approaching, and sometimes exceeding, limits of sustainability, there is a pressing need to find alternative water sources. With water demand in Australia approaching, and sometimes exceeding, limits of sustainability, there is a pressing need to find alternative water sources. At the same time, urban stormwater pollution remains a major environmental threat. These problems are particularly difficult in urban areas, due to space constraints. This project will test and refine porous pavement technology, which could help solve the 'urban water problem'. Replacing impervious areas with porous pavements will allow urban stormwater to be treated and harvested for re-use. Waterways will be protected from pollution, and the vast quantity of urban stormwater generated (similar to the total reticulated water supplied in Australia) can be harvested to sustain cities.Read moreRead less

Concept invention refers to the act of discovering new concepts for the first time. Concept invention may require a new interpretation and a shift in intentional mode that motivates new mappings of the situation prior to the discovery of a new concept. This project is concerned with developing intelligent design agents that are capable of inventing creative concepts of design forms, shapes and compositions while involved in the design process. A new approach of exploiting the notion of displacement of concepts with regard to concept invention in designing will be adopted and utilised in developing the structure of intelligent agents.Read moreRead less
Evaluating the role of buffer strips in reducing soil erosion and sediment delivery to water bodies. The role of vegetative buffer strips in reducing soil erosion and sediment delivery to water bodies is well established, but the physical processes and their interactions involved are not well understood. The role of vegetative buffer strips in reducing soil erosion and sediment delivery to water bodies is well established, but the physical processes and their interactions involved are not well understood. These hydraulic, sediment/chemical transport processes will be modelled from physical principles, recognising that the multi-size characteristics of soil plays a vital role in buffer strip effectiveness. This model will be validated using new and existing data sources, including both controlled experiments and field data obtained in Australia and overseas. A user friendly version of the model will be developed for farm managers and advisory services as a design tool.Read moreRead less

Then, several million years ago, aridity in Australia developed producing most of the desert features of the red Centre that we see today. The age of our deserts and other arid features are not, however, well known. This project will determine the age of desertification in Australia, thereby enhancing our understanding of such processes and the response of our landscape to changing climate.

Sediment stock-piling and the fate of Australian floodplains. Historic landuse practices have profoundly altered Australia's river systems in less than 200 years. Up to 80% of the sediment and associated pollutants eroded from Australia's catchments are stored in floodplains. The assumption that floodplains can continue to absorb the impacts of upland erosion and land degradation is extremely risky, yet it underpins current catchment management policies in Australia. Up to 80% of the sediment and associated pollutants eroded from Australia's catchments are stored in floodplains. The assumption that floodplains can continue to absorb the impacts of upland erosion and land degradation is extremely risky, yet it underpins current catchment management policies in Australia. This project delivers essential data on floodplain storage and remobilisation rates using innovative sediment dating and tracing technologies. The significance of this research lies in its immediate relevance to rural industries and the management of Australian riverine and offshore ecosystems.
