Despite accounting for more than 20% of the road crashes, relatively little research has been conducted on fleet safety in Australia. This research will develop guidelines for current best practice and design, implement and evaluate several new countermeasures. More importantly, it will develop a comprehensive model for future design, implementation and evaluation of fleet safety that will extend the frontier of knowledge in crash analysis and prevention. By working closely with QFleet, current fleet safety thinking will be advanced to reduce the frequency and severity of road crashes thereby reducing road trauma and increasing business effectiveness.Read moreRead less
Improving Road Safety and Driver Security: The Case of High Risk Fleet (Taxi) Drivers in Australia. Road crashes constitute a major cause of death and injury in Australia and taxis have a 22 times higher crash rate compared to private passenger vehicles. In addition to their high crash risks, 1/3 of all taxi drivers have experienced physical assaults. This innovative study will examine the circumstances that contribute toward taxi crashes and assaults on drivers and more importantly, it will des ....Improving Road Safety and Driver Security: The Case of High Risk Fleet (Taxi) Drivers in Australia. In addition to their high crash risks, 1/3 of all taxi drivers have experienced physical assaults. This innovative study will examine the circumstances that contribute toward taxi crashes and assaults on drivers and more importantly, it will design, implement and evaluate a program of countermeasures to improve the safety and security of taxi drivers, which will contribute significantly toward reducing the truma related to road crashes in Australia and assaults on public transport drivers.Read moreRead less
Assessing the full impacts of high efficiency heavy vehicles in urban traffic networks using new analytical tools. Significant economic benefits result from new innovative heavy vehicles, which are able to carry up to twice the payload of standard semi-trailers. In addition, those vehicles have the potential to reduce overall accidents and evironmental degradation. Those benefits need to be traded-off against the impacts on other road users. Significant economic benefits result from new innovative heavy vehicles, which are able to carry up to twice the payload of standard semi-trailers. In addition, those vehicles have the potential to reduce overall accidents and evironmental degradation. Those benefits need to be traded-off against the impacts on other road users. This research will improve the operation of such vehicles in regional centres by producing: (1) an assessment methodology to deal with options for network efficiency gains which will capture the full impacts; and (2) a computer modelling tool based on fundamental research to quantify those impacts, in terms of delays and accident rates.Read moreRead less
Developing Contemporary Driving Risk Assessment Tools to Improve Fleet Safety. The development of effective driving risk management tools will provide valuable insight into methods to reduce a significant community and national problem, as work-related road crashes cost Australia $15 billion a year. The development of effective driving risk management tools will provide valuable insight into methods to reduce a significant community and national problem, as work-related road crashes cost Australia $15 billion a year. Importantly, the project has the potential to benefit both urban and rural areas of Queensland and Australia, as road crashes are a national problem. The research study also has the potential to create business cost savings from reductions in productivity loss and medical expenses, as well as flow through to the general population in terms of better (a) fleet management, and (b) driver attitudes and behaviour.Read moreRead less
Safety in the Heavy Vehicle Industry: A Collaborative Response. In the absence of research that identifies the key determinants of heavy vehicle crashes, countermeasures will continue to be based on anecdote. The proposed study will determine the role key risk factors, namely scheduling and sleep-related factors, play in heavy vehicle crashes and will identify cost-effective strategies to reduce the growing economic burden associated with these crashes.Read moreRead less
Development and evaluation of an Occupational Health and Safety framework for work related driving. This project will develop and evaluate an Occupational Health and Safety competency framework for work related road safety practices within seven council operational vehicles fleets. The results from this research will apply to work related driving in numerous organisations and communities and it is expected that results will carry over into the public domain as organisations involved comprise employees that are representatives of local communities. The information obtained from this research will have economic implications in numerous small vehicle operations that currently lack resources to obtain and develop the information and outcomes of this research program. The initiation and control of action in motor vehicle driving. Every time we pull up to a traffic light or overtake another vehicle our brain is making a whole series of critical decisions about when and how to carry out the manoeuvre accurately and safely. This project seeks to better understand the processes involved. Every time we pull up to a traffic light or overtake another vehicle our brain is making a whole series of critical decisions about when and how to carry out the manoeuvre accurately and safely. This project seeks to better understand the processes involved. Using the latest, high fidelity GPS and accelerometer technology, highly accurate measurements of driver behaviour and vehicle dynamics will be made in a real vehicle. Understanding when and how we carry out these types of basic tasks will play a central role in future brake, suspension and steering system design; will help guide the specifications of road and road sign design; and will help motivate additions or alterations to current driver training programmes.Read moreRead less
The influence of visible traffic enforcement on the incidence of other crime: Implications for intelligence-driven crime prevention. This project marks the first scientific investigation in Australia examining the potential for visible traffic enforcement to reduce other crime. It will: (i) examine the effect of routine traffic enforcement [deployed via traffic specific intellegence] on general crime rates (study 1); and (ii) determine whether the targeting of visible enforcement at crime "hots ....The influence of visible traffic enforcement on the incidence of other crime: Implications for intelligence-driven crime prevention. This project marks the first scientific investigation in Australia examining the potential for visible traffic enforcement to reduce other crime. It will: (i) examine the effect of routine traffic enforcement [deployed via traffic specific intellegence] on general crime rates (study 1); and (ii) determine whether the targeting of visible enforcement at crime "hotspots" can heighten this effect (study 2). The results of the studies will be examined in light of relevent theoretical perspectives pertaining to crime prevention, such as "broken windows" and deterence theories. The research complements a national move to increase intelligence-driven enforcement activities and will inform policing policy and crime prevention strategies worldwide.Read moreRead less

This study aims to reduce the number of children killed and injured as passengers in car crashes. These deaths and injuries currently impose huge social and emotional costs on the community and the families involved. Any injury will compromise child health and development, and many result in temporary or long-term disability and care needs. From an economic viewpoint alone, child passenger fatalities and injuries have been conservatively estimated to cost in excess of $400 million per year. Thus, this research will contribute to both social and economic savings and contribute to better health outcomes for the nation's childrenRead moreRead less

The aims of the network are to integrate the activities of researchers and practitioners in the areas of vehicles and road infrastructure and through cross-disciplinary collaboration apply intelligent control systems to deliver mobility, which is safer for all users, reduces driver stress and environmental impact with increased local manufactured content and improved cost effectiveness. It is of great significance to provide a cohesive solution to the transport problem considering all modes, environmental impacts, and economical and social considerations. This project should lead to a report identifying Australia's capability in this sector and a roadmap for a future research network integrating university and industry based research.Read moreRead less
