The atlas of trace metals in the mouse brain: a new tool for neuroscientists. This project will produce the first atlas of trace metals in the mouse brain: a set of 'maps' of a type of brain often used to study diseases affecting the human brain. This online resource will show neuroscientists unprecedented 3D detail of the distribution in the brain of trace metals, which are implicated in such diseases as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
Supersaturated and non-digestible dispersions in the intestinal lumen: new mechanisms to reduce variability in the rate and extent of drug absorption. This project will design new polymers to be included in capsule formulations to prevent the precipitation of drugs in the intestine after their oral administration. This new technology will reduce the incidence of side-effects and ensure that patients absorb the correct dose of drug regardless of whether they take the drug before or after food.
The first integrated multimodal assay for the ultrasensitive detection of dengue contamination of blood. This project will develop the first screening test to check for dengue contamination of blood donations in Australia. This will help ensure safe, continued supply from blood donors, particularly in Queensland where dengue is on the rise.
Theoretical studies of molecular mechanisms of abnormal protein aggregation. Many proteins undergo conformational change and association as part of their physiological behavior. However, some proteins share a tendency to abnormal aggregation and form amyloid fibrils leading to disorders such as Alzheimer's and variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob diseases. Insulin, one such protein, has a high propensity to aggregate and form fibrils creating difficulties in preparation, storage and application. Using advanced theoretical modelling techniques we will gain insight into the molecular mechanism of fibrillation by investigating the formation of insulin aggregates. An improved understanding of the essential mechanism of protein aggregation will allow the rational design of new drugs.Read moreRead less
Cellular and molecular mechanisms for gut homeostasis in mammals. Certain molecules are responsible for gut homeostasis. This project aims to develop new tools to manipulate the cellular and molecular pathways around these molecules, which should provide benefit for human and animal health. This project will test whether the basis of many health conditions is disrupted gut homeostasis, through changes in diet and our gut bacteria.
Intracellular trafficking and function of a recycling receptor which prolongs the serum half-life of novel therapeutic proteins. The life span of recombinant engineered proteins for therapeutic use is a critical factor in their effectiveness, ease of clinical application and cost. This project will exploit interactions with a natural receptor, which prolongs the lifespan of serum proteins, to enhance survival of therapeutic engineered proteins.
