The GOOD NIGHT Project: A Sleep Intervention To Prevent Depression And Improve Cardiac Health In Adolescence
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$902,741.00
Summary
There is a pressing need for effective approaches to preventing depression during adolescence. The primary aim of the project is to assess whether a brief sleep intervention can prevent depression in vulnerable adolescents. Given that sleep interventions also encourage daytime activity, which when combined with improved sleep has potential benefits for cardiovascular health, the secondary aim is to test whether the sleep intervention improves early indicators of cardiovascular risk.
From The Laboratory To The Classroom: Validation Of An Innovative Laboratory Model Of Adolescent Impulsivity And Alcohol Use Using A School-based Randomised Controlled Trial
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$399,267.00
Summary
I am a psychologist focused on understanding how different psychosocial approaches to reducing adolescent alcohol use actually work. I will achieve this using a new laboratory model I have developed to determine the “active ingredients” of different interventions. Using a randomised controlled trial, I will then test whether combining these ingredients produces better outcomes in the prevention of teenage drinking.
Increasing The Efficacy Of Treatment For Socially Anxious Youth Through Theoretically Derived Improvements
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$971,747.00
Summary
Social anxiety has a severe impact on young people. Although we have good treatments for most anxious youth, those with social anxiety show the least change. The proposed project will evaluate the benefits of a new treatment for socially anxious young people based on current understanding of the causes of this disorder. The new treatment will have better effects than traditional therapy and will lead to increased knowledge of the causes of this disorder.
Self-compassion: Promoting Resilience And Wellbeing In Adolescent Populations
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$68,946.00
Summary
The importance of targeting early symptoms of poor mental health in adolescence cannot be underestimated. Self-compassion is linked with psychological wellbeing and may serve as a protective mechanism against psychopathological trajectories. I will investigate self-compassion in adolescence, and develop two early-intervention programs; for a high-school and a chronic illness population. To investigate this, my PhD will involve 2 empirical studies, meta-analysis, and 2 intervention studies.
Empowering Young People To Make Positive Health Choices: Translation Of Evidence-based Drug And Alcohol Prevention To Australian Adolescents
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$177,197.00
Summary
Effective prevention and early intervention for alcohol and other drug use disorders is available but not widely implemented in schools. Through the use of digital technologies this project will facilitate transportability of evidence-based approaches into everyday teaching, parenting, and school-based counselling practice. By bringing together research and practice this project maximises the potential of these approaches to reduce the considerable burden of alcohol and drug use disorders.
