Early Antipsychotic Exposure During Childhood And Adolescence: Does It Lead To Long Term Brain And Behaviour Changes In Adulthood?
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
Mental health problems affect at least 9% of Australia's 4.1 million children. With the trend towards prescribing antipsychotic medication “off-label” to control these mental disorders in young people and the long-term consequences of doing so unknown, this timely research program aims to address a critical health issue by providing clinicians with valuable information so they can better balance the risk/benefit ratio before prescribing antipsychotics to young people.
Neurodevelopmental Risk Factors For Depression From Childhood To Early Adulthood
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$470,144.00
Summary
To understand who is at risk for depression, we need to understand how both the environment and biological factors promote risk at specific times in the life cycle. This research project will examine such risk factors in different phases of life (from in utero to early adulthood) using a developmental framework. The results of this research will provide a clearer basis for the design of prevention strategies that target individuals, their families and/or broader environmental factors.
Refining Treatment Strategies For Youth Depression: Clinical Trials And Biomarker Development
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$339,221.00
Summary
Depression is the biggest contributor to disease burden of all illnesses suffered by young people. Despite this existing treatments are often not effective. The Career Development Fellowship will aid efforts to improve treatments for youth depression, by enabling the implementation of important clinical trials, and the identification and development of imaging biomarkers that can help to target treatments at patients most likely to benefit from them.
Developmental Neurobiology Of Schizophrenia And Translation Into New Treatments
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$611,574.00
Summary
Our ultimate goal is to expand effective treatment options for people with schizophrenia particularly ones that can prevent schizophrenia from developing. The successful completion of this project will identify novel biological pathways by which schizophrenia develops and, importantly, will yield new molecular tools to personalise treatment of schizophrenia.
Biological Sensitivity To Context: Risk And Resilience For Adolescent Depression
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$408,388.00
Summary
Depression is among the leading causes of disability and disease burden throughout the world. Little is known about how biological and environmental factors interact to cause adolescent depression; even less is known about what factors might help to prevent it. This project aims to investigate how the brain and the environment interact to predict risk and resilience for depression in adolescence. This research will ultimately help in the detection and treatment of adolescent depression.
