The Centre will enhance Australian clinical immunisation research and training, focussing upon clinical questions with translatable outcomes not easily addressed by industry. Optimal immunisation and interventions to maximise uptake of existing and new vaccines in high risk patient groups, such as children with cancer, immigrants, children with chronic diseases and adolescents will be studied. New vaccine trials, innovative use of existing vaccines, systematic collection of vaccine failure data, ....The Centre will enhance Australian clinical immunisation research and training, focussing upon clinical questions with translatable outcomes not easily addressed by industry. This fellowship aims to reduce youth suicide via an integrated research program delivered across North West Melbourne. It’s objectives are to: 1) Improve the care provided to young people who present to emergency departments with self-harm 2) Increase capacity of young people and school staff to recognise and respond to risk; and 3) Reduce suicidal behaviour among those at risk through delivering novel online interventions in specialist clinical settings.

Summary
Food allergy (FA) has risen to epidemic proportions in recent times and Australia has one of the highest rates in the world. FA is most common in children under 5 years, yet adolescents are at the greatest risk of death from food-related anaphylaxis. We don’t know why this is the case. Our research will describe FA prevalence and will assess the factors placing FA adolescents at high risk of severe allergic reactions. Findings will influence policy for management of FA and anaphylaxis.

Summary
Adolescence is a risk period for the emergence of psychiatric disorders. It is also a time of rapid change in the brain, but few studies have detailed changes in neurodevelopment during this sensitive period. We will study twins from early adolescence and use brain imaging to investigate changing brain patterns as the brain matures, and thereby, gain insight into factors responsible for increasing our risk or resilience for major mental health conditions and optimal points for intervention.

Summary
We will investigate of the impacts of parental supply of alcohol between 13-18 years, on early adult alcohol use (19-23 years). We will follow an existing cohort of ~1,810 parent-child dyads, and assess the development of alcohol use, disorders, harms and aggression. We will investigate the impacts of: parental supply of sips vs drinks; supervised vs unsupervised supply; and modifying effects of contexts of supply and mediators (such as peer, child factors, etc.) controlling for confounders.

Summary
Physical inactivity has been described as a global pandemic and only 15% of Australian adolescents are sufficiently active. The pressure to perform in major school assessments drives many older adolescents to sacrifice physical activity to maximise academic performance. Our team has designed a time-efficient solution to increase physical activity in senior high school students using high intensity interval training which will be evaluated using a cluster randomised controlled trial.
