Post-market Surveillance Of Medicine-related Adverse Events
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$99,248.00
Summary
Observational studies using administrative data are an important complement to spontaneous reporting systems for detecting medicine-related adverse events after they go to market, as they reflect real-world use of medicines; yet, they require rigorous methodological approaches to avoid bias. This project will review the existing methodologies for detecting adverse events in administrative data and apply them to Australian data.
Ageing Well And Productively: Pathways To Healthy Workforce Participation And Caregiving.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$143,660.00
Summary
Good health is vital to increase workforce participation, which enables us to pay for rising health care costs. This study will examine how socio-economic, behavioural, environmental and health-related factors impact on healthy workforce participation among older Australians. It will identify ways to prevent people having to retire early because of ill-health and will inform policy makers and health program developers about how best to maintain or increase a healthy workforce participation.
Modifiable Risks And Interventions For Cognitive Decline, Depression And Dementia In Older People
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$430,055.00
Summary
This research proposal will explore the modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline (ie. changes in memory and thinking functions) in older people. It will examine the pertinence of critical contributors to glial-neuronal networks including depression, cardiovascular disease, sleep-wake systems, mental and physical exercise, inflammatory processes and diet, as well as test interventions that target these risk factors. It will use sophisticated brain scanning methods to examine which factors pr ....This research proposal will explore the modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline (ie. changes in memory and thinking functions) in older people. The overall aim is to improve treatments and outcomes for people with osteoporosis. This will be achieved by better predicting those who are likely to fracture and subsequently those who do well post fracture from those who do poorly. Following an osteoporotic fracture there is an increased risk of re- fracture and of premature death. This research will define those risk factors for fracture, re-fracture and early death in a large group of men and women followed for over 20 years.
Establishing Pathways To Implement And Sustain Evidence Based Fall Prevention In Primary Care: The ISOLVE Project
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,156,546.00
Summary
Researchers in allied health and primary care are partnering with Northern Sydney Medicare Local and the NSW State Falls Program (Clinical Excellence Commission) to establish a multi-disciplinary pathway model for fall prevention. The aim is to establish integrated processes and pathways at the levels of practitioner, practice, and program to identify older people at risk of falls and engage a whole of primary care approach to fall prevention. This project will employ multi-methodologies.
Improving Decision Making On Health Interventions: Factoring In The Long Term Economic Impacts Of Informal (unpaid) Care
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$628,963.00
Summary
This project looks at the future health of the Australian population that will keep more informal carers out of employment and diminish their own livings standards, thereby reducing funds available to government and the impact of interventions that could improve the health of the population and increase employment of carers.

This Centre intends to generate crucial knowledge to inform social and economic responses to population ageing, one of the most important issues of the 21st century. Population ageing exerts unprecedented pressures on social norms and policy institutions, both in Australia and around the world. Leading researchers from a range of disciplines will undertake multidisciplinary research to help governments, businesses, and consumers prepare for and make better decisions for an ageing world, with consequent social and economic benefits for families and communities expected to flow to Australia, the Asian region and the world.Read moreRead less

The Centre aims to execute world class basic and applied research to transform our capacity to respond to the economic and social challenges of demographic change, and to changes in individual longevity and cognitive and motor capacity. It will combine in-house expertise with leading researchers globally in initiatives to generate new outcome-oriented approaches to studying the population ageing process and its implications. It s research will inform innovative policy formulation and product and market development, and train a new generation of researchers into population ageing with an enriched appreciation of the cross-disciplinary dimensions of population ageing research.Read moreRead less
Understanding how reproduction and sexual conflict drive sex-dependent longevity and ageing. The biological study of longevity and ageing has two important fronts: understanding how evolution shapes lifespan and ageing, and the mechanistic study of how molecules, genes, hormones, tissues and cells interact during ageing. The evolutionary study of ageing is considered one of the success stories of the emerging field of evolutionary medicine, yet we desperately need greater integration of the evolutionary and mechanistic spheres. This project addresses why males and females have different lifespans and age differently in a way that bridges evolutionary and mechanistic study, and will build Australia's research capacity to study ageing at both levels.
