Summary
Sonic drilling to provide contamination-free core sampling of rock and unconsolidated sediment. Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent. Understanding environmental and climatic changes, from the temperate period when humans arrived about 50,000 years ago to the present state of widespread aridity, is crucial for modelling future climate change. This facility will provide new generation drilling equipment which is necessary to obtain accurate records.
Federalism for the 21st Century - A Framework for Achieving Reform and Change. Improvements to Australia's federal consitutional system could return between $9 billion and $20 billion each year to taxpayers (up to 3% of GDP). The problem affects service delivery in areas like health and education and hampers our ability to meet new challenges like water scarcity and climate change. Ocean mixing processes and innovation in oceanographic models: This fellowship project aims to develop new oceanographic tools and thermodynamic variables to support a new generation of accurate ocean models more suitable for the prediction of changes in a warming world. The ocean’s role in the climate system is predominantly to store and to transport heat and carbon dioxide, and the ocean’s ability to do this is sensitive to the strength of mixing processes, which are quite uncertain. This project hopes to distinguish the vital role of vertical mixing from that of horizontal mixing by (i) developing algorithms to construct neutral density surfaces in climate models, (ii) formulating new inverse techniques to deduce the amount of vertical mixing in various ocean regions, and (iii) incorporating new approaches to ocean mixing processes and thermodynamics into ocean models.Read moreRead less

It will contribute new knowledge to the study of democratic representation; provide a new model for the neglected area of the study of comparative state differences; and heighten Australia's research profile in two areas of increased international interest: both abortion and conscience votes.

An Australian fluid-inclusion facility for climate-change science. Understanding past temperature and rainfall changes is essential for improving climate projections. The proposed facility will generate new palaeotemperature and palaeorainfall information from cave deposits, leading to a better understanding of natural climate variability and change.
The Great Barrier Reef in 2100. Our research aims to answer fundamental geomorphic questions about the future of coral reefs, focusing on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). We will develop cutting-edge, fully open-source numerical models to quantify the eco-morphodynamic evolution of the GBR under IPCC climate-change scenarios. Our geomorphic numerical models will consider biotic/abiotic feedbacks including synergistic effects of multiple stressors such as waves, temperature, acidification and sedime ....The Great Barrier Reef in 2100. Examining the vulnerability of ocean carbon biogeochemistry in a high CO2 world. Rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere from human activity is changing the biogeochemistry of the ocean, with large potential consequences on future atmospheric CO2. This work will explore these changes and will result in a more complete understanding of how the ocean will either accelerate or delay the increase in atmospheric CO2.

The project is designed to support the objectives for schooling in Australia that have been identified by the Council of Australian Governments. These objectives are in the face of growing inequities in the distribution of educational resources, growing concentrations of students with high levels of educational needs, and imbalances in the distribution of resources across key stages, especially in early childhood education. ....Federalism in Australian schooling: Its impact upon quality and equity. Dynamics of carbonate sands and morphodynamics of coral reef environments. Coral reefs are mainly composed of mobile sedimentary deposits that influence the living regions of the coral reefs. Using sites on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the project will learn how, why and how fast sand advances, and will predict how these processes will change in response to predicted rises in sea levels.
