This project aims to establish numerically certifiable mathematical theory and methods for semi-algebraic optimisation problems. Numerically certifiable optimisation principles and techniques are vital for the practical use of optimisation technologies because they can be readily implemented by common computer models and algorithms. Yet no such methodologies exist for multi-extremal, semi-algebraic optimisation problems which are common in modern science and medicine. The expected outcomes of this project include enhanced optimisation methods for diffusion tensor imaging, an emerging technology in brain sciences.Read moreRead less

This project aims to examine the opportunities, risks and consequences of the Internet of Things (IoT) and establish ways to foster technological leadership while ensuring responsible deployment. This project explores the immense potential that the Internet of Things offers for Australia – the productivity and safety of our industries, the efficiency and impact of services, and our ability to contribute skilled jobs to the growing global digital economy. These analyses will clarify the economic, social and cultural perspectives of deployment and establish a set of key findings to guide policy making over the next decade.Read moreRead less
Probing Anaesthetic Effects with New Functional Imaging Paradigms. This project seeks new insights into the effects of anaesthetics on brain function and repair. Anaesthesia is used in small-animal imaging to immobilise the animal, but in many cases the anaesthesia itself affects the neurophysiological parameters under study. It has also been shown that many anaesthetics enhance recovery after brain injury in small animals. This project plans to exploit a novel functional brain-imaging technique ....Probing Anaesthetic Effects with New Functional Imaging Paradigms. This project plans to exploit a novel functional brain-imaging technique for conscious animals to gain new insights into the effects of anaesthetics on brain function and recovery from injury. The knowledge gained is expected to improve knowledge of anaesthetic action, guide future anaesthetic use in small animal imaging to improve the accuracy of image-derived research data, and help to clarify how anaesthetics confer neuroprotective effects in brain injury.Read moreRead less

This project seeks to develop new approaches to increase the productivity and competitiveness of the Australian aluminium extrusion industry. The project will use customised simulation software to optimise the design of extrusion dies, thereby substantially reducing the time and cost of developing new extrusion dies. It intends to similarly optimise the processing conditions for high quality extrusion, further contributing to cost reduction. Anticipated project outcomes include fundamental models of material deformation behaviour and damage accumulation that, through computer simulation, will increase die life and reduce scrap.Read moreRead less

This Centre aims to train industry-ready, world class graduates in cryo-electron microscopy of membrane proteins. The Centre’s graduates and research results would enable tomorrow’s industrial expansion in structure-enhanced drug design. Expected outcomes are world-first structural biology knowledge and techniques, and the entrepreneurial and technical skills desired by industry. This should provide significant benefits including advancing Australian biotechnological capacity and improved linkages with major pharmaceutical partners. It should also provide a substantive competitive advantage to nascent Australian biotechnology companies that also links into new National investment into drug discovery and development infrastructure.Read moreRead less
The combined use of proteomics and small molecules for target identification and pathway analysis. This project intends to investigate how a series of new small molecules identified from our research to improve the metabolic effects of insulin. This project will integrate medicinal chemistry with proteomics and metabolic biology to identify the cellular targets and their mechanism of action.
Development and use of novel technologies to improve drugs targeting G protein-coupled receptor complexes involved in disease. The purpose of this project is to develop and use new and innovative technologies to improve many of the drugs taken for a wide range of medical conditions. The expected outcomes are the discovery of better drugs and a greater understanding of the drugs currently on the market, particularly enabling improved management of side-effects.
