The evolution of global communities of practice within organisations: leveraging structure, identity and coordination. Communities of practice, groups of people who interact to share interests, concerns, or problems in a topic area, are popular within global organizations seeking to leverage dispersed knowledge and expertise for competitive advantage. This research project will examine factors that influence the effectiveness of global communities of practice.
Identifying the diversity and evolution of loci associated with adaptation to aridity/heat and salinity in ancient cereal crops. This project will use ancient grains of wheat, barley and rye to find 'lost' genetic diversity at key genes associated with resistance to aridity, salt and disease. This project will make the proteins of key genes, and study their interaction with the environment over time by measuring ions in the grains to reveal the ancient environmental conditions.
Identification of Traits and Function by Genomic Matching. Differences between individuals are largely inherited and therefore encoded within the DNA. The challenge is to develop practical means of detecting these differences irrespective of whether they are observable as a phenotype.
Here we focus on livestock. For example, most Australian cattle are horned rather than polled. The inheritance is relatively simple but there is still no DNA test to detect the recessive horning gene.

Here we focus on livestock. For example, most Australian cattle are horned rather than polled. The inheritance is relatively simple but there is still no DNA test to detect the recessive horning gene.
The genomic matching technique is an in-house patented procedure for identifying such DNA differences. If successful, our test will assist industry to eliminate horning and thereby painful dehorning whilst reducing damage to workers and product.

Fast tracking pea weevil resistance into field pea cultivars through interspecific hybridisation. Field pea is a high value export product of Australia and increased adoption will lead to greater sustainability of agriculture, improved farm income and value adding opportunities (eg. food industry) in regional Australia. Field pea is a high value export product of Australia and increased adoption will lead to greater sustainability of agriculture, improved farm income and value adding opportunities (eg. food industry) in regional Australia. Novel breeding tools used within this project will accelerate the development of pea weevil resistant field peas that are less dependent on the application of pesticides than current varieties. Their availability will encourage further uptake of field pea into Australian cropping systems, contributing to environmentally sustainable farming systems by improving soil nitrogen levels and reducing the environmental effect of pesticides.Read moreRead less
Genetic variation in narrow leafed lupin (NLL) accessions and breeding programs. The centre of origin of a crop plant is expected to have the greatest extant genetic variation of wild relatives. The centre of origin of a crop plant is expected to have the greatest extant genetic variation of wild relatives. Development of modern cultivars may be accompanied by a severe genetic bottleneck, whereby subsequent breeding efforts are hampered by lack of significant genetic variation within domesticated breeding material. This proposal will research the extent to which the available genetic variation in wild accessions of the recently developed crop Lupinus angustifolius has been utilised in breeding programs around the world. Results will be applied to broaden the gene pool and improve adaptation of new cultivars in the National Lupin Improvement Program.Read moreRead less
Achieving flexibility through coordination: reframing the practice of ambidexterity to benefit business and employees during organisational change. Personal alarms are designed to enable older people who are living alone to gain assistance in an emergency. Australia's population is ageing and the number of older people living alone is increasing. Although personal alarms have been available for many years there has been surprisingly little research and there are still many gaps in our knowledge. These limit our ability to maximise the potential of this technology in enabling older Australians to age well and productively at home. This project seeks to enhance our understanding of the adoption and appropriate use of this technology by older Australians and inform the development of strategies to achieve maximum benefit for both older individuals and the community at large.Read moreRead less
Advancing prevention science: application of social marketing to change the drinking culture of young Australians. This project will provide a comprehensive cluster randomised control trial of an innovative social marketing education intervention, which focuses on moderating adolescent attitudes and intentions to drink alcohol.
Linking genes with the phenotype - creation of a genetic linkage map for the silver-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada maxima. R&D undertaken in this project will increase our fundamental understanding of the role genetics plays in production of a premium quality cultured South Sea pearl. R&D undertaken in this project will increase our fundamental understanding of the role genetics plays in production of a premium quality cultured South Sea pearl. When utilised in future selective breeding programs aimed at improving pearl quality traits the information generated will allow Australian pearling companies to be more productive and to maintain a competitive advantage over their rivals. Many rural communities are dependent on pearling companies for their economic prosperity and community identity. Consequently, positive growth of the pearl industry as a result of the proposed R&D will greatly benefit the economic and social wealth of these rural populations.Read moreRead less
Investigating the Indirect Effects of Child-Targeted Food Promotion on Children's Diets. Obesity is forecast to cost the Australian community more than $58 billion in 2008. The prevention and reduction of obesity thus has the potential to create significant savings in terms of obesity-related treatment costs and impairments. Children have been identified as a population requiring particular attention in efforts to combat obesity. Obesity is forecast to cost the Australian community more than $58 billion in 2008. The prevention and reduction of obesity thus has the potential to create significant savings in terms of obesity-related treatment costs and impairments. Children have been identified as a population requiring particular attention in efforts to combat obesity. The proposed study will provide an enhanced understanding of the role that food promotion plays in sub-optimal food choices made by children and their parents. The results of the study will be translated into specific public policy recommendations to assist governments and health agencies in determining appropriate courses of action to promote healthy diets among children and their families.Read moreRead less
