Summary
Recent studies have established that both human genetic susceptibility and viral infections during early childhood are important drivers of asthma development. It has also been noted that asthmatics’ airways are colonized with different bacteria to non-asthmatics. In this project we will examine how genetic susceptibility and interactions between bacteria and viruses in children's airways promote the development of allergy and asthma.
Radiotherapy Treatment For Prostate Cancer - A Change In Practice Based On Direct Evidence For Targeting And Toxicity Effects Using Real Outcomes Data

Radiotherapy for prostate cancer treatment will be more effective when we have better knowledge of what patient anatomy needs to be targeted, and what needs to be avoided. This project will combine data collected during a large Australasian prostate cancer radiotherapy trial, ‘RADAR’, with data collected using new patient imaging methods to determine how patient anatomy impacts on the effectiveness of their treatment and the side-effects they experience.

Summary
The deadly asbestos-induced cancer mesothelioma is continuing to kill tens of thousands of people each year. Most patients are diagnosed with advanced disease. In this study we will use novel biomarkers to help the diagnosis of mesothelioma and potentially improve treatment options for patients.
Malaria infection affects many millions around the world each year. This project brings together scientists working on mouse models of malaria and on clinical studies of malaria in Africa and Asia, with mathematicians and physicists who will analyse and model their experimental data. The project involves 'data mining' to apply novel statistical and mathematical modelling approaches to understand how the immune system controls malaria infection.

Cluster crossover and stepped wedge designs have emerged recently as study designs used in clinical and public health research settings. However, despite their use there has been very little methodological assessment of the statistical analysis methods used in current practice. The proposed research will assess the correctness of current methods and will produce a toolkit of state-of-the art, defensible trial design, analysis and reporting methods for the clinical/health researcher.
Modelling The Possible Effects Of Low-dose Irradiation In Young Australians Exposed To CT Scans

Summary
Radiation from CT (computerised tomographic X-ray) scans of children may cause a later increase in cancer risk. However, any risk for an individual will be small, so we are using de-identified records to study the average risk of cancer in 600,000 young Australians exposed to CT scans between 1985-2005. Our project has the capacity to detect an increase of 10% in the risk of exposed compared with non-exposed. Results will be available by Dec 2012.
HIV is a rapidly evolving virus, and within an infected individual it continually acquires new mutations and joins together mutations by recombination. We have developed a novel system for studying recombination, and find that different individuals have different recombination rates, which may contribute to why some individuals survive longer. This project aims to identify the mechanisms responsible for differing recombination rates and how we can alter these to improve patient outcome.

Summary
Whilst ambulatory blood pressure monitoring data has been shown to be a good predictor of cardiovascular events, there remains controversy as to its utility in clinical practice. This project will use data from existing population and clinical cohort studies to examine the role of ambulatory blood pressure in risk assessment and hypertension management in Australia and around the globe. The findings are likely to have a major impact on clinical guidelines for hypertension management.
