Large-volume, multi-use micro-computed tomography. This project aims to augment the existing X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) scanning capabilities in South Australia and Australia by introducing a large-volume micro-CT scanner. This will enable three-dimensional scanning of large and heavy samples including whole machine parts, limbs/segments, prosthesis devices, large animals and vertebrates, fossils and plant root systems. The project expects to allow experimental testing rigs to be placed inside the scanner to test samples, such as mechanical testing of femurs or medical devices, while scanning, to study the structure-function relationships. This will build unlimited computer simulations of mechanical tests, valuable for precious specimens. Benefits will include aiding in risk reduction, decision making on products and a higher quality workforce.Read moreRead less

Summary
In-situ structural safety diagnosis of composite materials: lamb wave diffraction tomography using multi-frequency data. Light weight composite materials are used extensively in different industry fields and monitoring their structural integrity is critical to their safety. This project will provide a cost-effective and technically advanced method of assessing the integrity of composite materials, preventing unforeseen and potentially catastrophic failure.

This project aims to establish a facility that analyses three-dimensional and transient events for nearly any type of application, material and size scale. Digital Image correlation technologies are widely used to measure displacements and strains due to their accuracy, robustness, versatility and overall ease of use. This project will characterise materials from quasi-static to ballistic range of loading, crucial to develop and validate advanced analytical and numerical models. The proposed infrastructure is expected to enhance experimental capabilities, and foster collaborative research across mechanical, civil, mining, sports, aerospace, automotive, marine and materials engineering.Read moreRead less
