Summary
Shiftwork is associated with increased risk for preterm birth & spontaneous abortion. In an animal model simulated shiftwork exposure during pregnancy increases fat deposits & reduces glucose tolerance in the adult offspring, suggesting exposure during pregnancy has lifelong health consequences for the progeny. This project will investigate the impact of shiftwork during gestation on the metabolic health of the offspring, & determine the stage of pregnancy most susceptible.

Summary
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women and there have been a number of recent events which have raised public concern that occupational exposures are contributing to the increasing occurrence of this cancer. In this study, we will investigate occupational causes of breast cancer, particularly shift work, industrial solvent use and combustion products. We will compare occupations of 1000 women with breast cancer and 2000 women without cancer.

Summary
Defects in neuronal cell migration during embryonic development lead to mental retardation and epilepsy. Although neuronal migration is essential for the development of normal intelligence, we know relatively little about the molecular mechanisms that regulate this process. We have identified two proteins, Socs6 and Socs7, which are essential for neuronal migration and normal cerebral cortex development. We propose to fully investigate the function of Socs6 and Socs7 during cortex development.

It therefore provides an excellent model for examining the growth, development and maintenance of nerve cells. This project will examine the effects on the organisation of the olfactory system when some guidance signals are altered. We can then determine what changes occur to the nerve cells when these extra molecules are produced.
