Summary
Cachexia is a hypermetabolic wasting syndrome involving depletion of both fat and muscle which affects 80% of cancer patients. The exact mechanisms of this syndrome are unknown at the molecular level and this affects our ability to predict, prevent or treat this problem. This study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of cancer cachexia syndrome with a view to implementing nutritional, exercise and pharmacological interventions to prevent its onset.

The aim of this project is determine how best to measure, analyse and compare the effects of different operations for women with breast cancer. This will be done with information on measurements of arm swelling, symptoms, functions, and other aspects of quality of life collected in over 1,000 women taking part in a national randomised trial. This research will provide important information about the effects of these operations, and about how best to design future surgical trials.

Chemotherapy improves survival in early lung cancer and advanced ovarian cancer but has significant side effects. Recent advances in chemotherapy have not been widely adopted because of differing opinions about whether the benefits of these treatments outweigh their harms. This research program will determine the benefits that patients and their doctors judge necessary to make these treatments worthwhile, and how best to incorporate this information into clinical discussions and decision-making.

Male Breast Cancer is an uncommon and poorly understood disease. Due to its low frequency, there is a paucity of studies with large numbers of patients. Our aim will be to establish one of the largest worldwide databases of Male Breast Cancer. This will allow us to more thoroughly investigate clinical, pathological and molecular characteristics of male breast cancer, improve treatment of these patients and potentially develop novel and innovative strategies for treatment of female breast cancer.

This research project aims to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness based cognitive therapy, an intervention using specific meditation and thought techniques, to reduce psychological distress in children who have been diagnosed with cancer and their parents. Summary
Population studies of female breast cancer (BC) show only a small proportion of familial aspects of BC can be explained by current knowledge of its causes. Women carrying PALB2 mutations who also have a strong family history of BC are of increased risk of BC. Our work will further define the risks and devise criteria to identify women most likely to carry PALB2 mutations. This will help prioritize testing, classify PALB2 variants and provide appropriate clinical management to carriers.

Summary
The aim is to perform pre-clinical studies to identify new therapies for blood cancers. We will utilise three new anti-cancer agents that kill tumor cells and genetically engineered mice that develop cancer. We will determine if these three new agents kill the mouse tumor cells and activate anti-tumor immunity. The combined effect of killing blood cancer cells using new therapeutics, coupled with enhancing the anti-cancer immune response may hold the key to developing new treatments.
