This study seeks to improve cancer patients' and family carers' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management. A pain education program will be offered to patients with recurrent or progressive cancer and their primary family carers. The study addresses a palliative care concern that impacts upon a large number of Australians each year. Currently there is no specific model of care for people with end stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), despite growing evidence of the specific symptoms and issues of this patient group. Interviews with end stage COPD patients and their carers will be undertaken to explore the services currently being accessed, and how well patients’ needs are being met by these services.
