Summary
The germ cells have been studied very extensively before birth or after puberty, but little is known about what happens shortly after birth. In children with undescended testes, early germ cell development is deranged, and this may be the key to find the right time for surgery to prevent subsequent infertility and risk of cancer. This project proposes some novel hypotheses to explain this and the studies aim to obtain the evidence to support surgery in the first 3-6 months of life..
Up to 50% of patients having surgery take regular medications and almost half of these patients have their medications stopped at the time of surgery. The interruption of their regular medications during this period exposes patients to associated complications. The project aims to improve the management of patients’ regular medications at the time of surgery, especially when they are fasting or nil by mouth, via a bundle of interventions that include education, reminders and audit/feedback.
This project aims to improve the acute treatment of children with burn injuries through developing more effective and novel treatments and understanding the conditions required for burn injuries to occur.
Improved Ex-vivo Culture Of Keratinocytes For Clinical Applications

Summary
Skin cells grown for clinical applications currently require animal-derived cells and-or non-defined products for their expansion in the laboratory; these reagents can potentially infect patients who receive these therapies. This project will identify the essential components provided by these reagents and develop a fully synthetic and defined culture system. This improvement will provide safer, cost-effective grafts and cell-based therapies that will benefit patients suffering burns and wounds.

Summary
The demand for prosthetic joint replacement surgery will double over the next decade. Complications involving the surgical wound are a devastating complication of this surgery. This randomised controlled trial aims to investigate whether skin cleansing prior to surgical incision with alcoholic iodine reduces the number of patients with superficial wound complications when compared to alcoholic chlorhexidine.
