Objectives: 1. To gain an understanding of the materials and formats that policy-makers and key fisheries organizations need in their utilization of research to develop policy. 2. To improve general stakeholder awareness of the key research findings in of FRDC and IRG projects. 3. To provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with material that they can use in their engagement with government and non-government agencies. 4. To develop a succinct fact-sheets and a report that integrate the key messages of eight previous IRG projects in a user-friendly and culturally appropriate way. Read moreRead less

Summary
At the ‘Shaping Indigenous RD&E Forum’ a key outcome was the development of a revised Indigenous Reference Group (IRG) which was tasked with a number of responsibilities including;

- determining a meeting schedule and work program - developing terms of reference for the group - developing processes under which the IRG will operate - building communication channels within the IRG, to broader forum participants and beyond - working towards processes to identify a more permanent arrangement with respect to representative(s) for the National Priorities Forum - working towards developing a ‘futures plan’ from the Cairns workshop outcomes and principles to provide more solid actions for progression - key outcomes have been developed and there is a need to identify the RD&E to deliver on the key principles - providing advice on a process for getting the Cairns forum group back together to review the IRG outcomes and processes - providing advice to FRDC, National Priorities Forum, people development program and assistance with the scholarship selection promotion.
This project seeks to provide a means to support the IRG so it can achieve the tasks it has been requested to address. These tasks could not be achieved without logistical, financial and human resource support for the group. Without the support of FRDC none of these actions will be able to take place.
Objectives: 1. To provide logistic, operational and executive support for the FRDC Indigenous Reference Group (IRG) to assist in the development and oversight of indigenous focused RD&E outcomes. Read moreRead less
Characterising The Fish Habitats In The Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia

Summary
Fisheries WA demonstrated in their Aquaculture Plan for the Recherche Archipelago (Fisheries WA 2000) that one of the major factors slowing development in this region is lack of accurate spatially explicit data on the distributions of benthic habitats and the influence of currents and wind generated waves. This information is required to aid the selection of suitable offshore aquaculture facilities and in the development of multiple use management plans.
This FRDC application, rather than focusing on cultural, economic and social elements of resource planning concentrates on the physical and biological data requirements. Many important cultural, economic and social issues have been identified in community and industry consultation by Fisheries WA during the development of the Aquaculture plan for the recherche Archipelago (Fisheries WA, 2000). The major outcome from these documents was that most other users of the Archipelago (Tourism, Shipping, Recreational and other commercial fishermen) indicated they were not happy with wholesale aquaculture development until accurate assessments of the benthic habitats and oceanography were completed over a wide spatial scale within the Archipelago. The recognition of this need has provided impetus resulting in aquaculture proponents (MG Kailis, Maritime Training Centre of Esperance), other fisheries (Esperance Professional Fishers Association, Esperance Professional Abalone Divers Association, 2 Recreational Angling Clubs), shipping concerns (Esperance Port Authority and industries utilising the port), tourism (Goldfields Esperance Development Commission), government departments (CALM, Fisheries WA, The Esperance Shire) and local concerned citizens (Recherche Action Group, Local Environmental Action Forum) all providing formal support for this application.
These groups see the need for representative broad scale bio-physical information to be used in the integrated planning to ensure the compatibility and sustainability of a diverse range of marine a coastal activities. This will ensure that the quality of the environment and the quality of life experienced by the populace living in Recherche Archipelago region is balanced with the need for new job creation in the region.
The 2.5 year research program we describe in this proposal will fulfil bio-physical data requirements for that planning process. This data will be available for incorporation into existing regional planning documents written in conjunction with cultural economic and social components that have been collected by Fisheries WA. It will also compliment and enhance information collected and developed by the Marine Group of the Department of Conservation and Land Management as part of the community and industry consultation involved in the MPA planning process. Objectives: 1. To identify, classify and map the distribution of, different benthic habitats in the Recherche Archipelago and link their distributions to bottom type and exposure to swells and currents. 2. To provide detailed ecological information to contribute to the responsible management of aquaculture fisheries in the region. 3. To increase community awareness of fish habitats through community involvement in the development of the planned biophysical surveys and through community and stakeholder consultation and presentations. The Symposium will provide a platform for the exchange of information and promote the development of novel techniques and applications for otolith-based analysis in ecology and fisheries management. My research, under the direction of Prof Bronwyn Gillanders, is focussed on examining long-term changes in fish populations, associated with climatic variability and human impacts, through the use of otolith microchemistry and sclerochronology (growth pattern analysis). I also supervise multiple Honours and PhD student projects related to fish otoliths and other calcified tissues. The Symposium is thus highly relevant to my key field of research.
The Mediterranean Fisheries Science Laboratory in Sète, France, is Europe’s leading research group in ecosystem focussed fisheries management. The group develops innovative tools to assess global change impacts to marine ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on the resistance and resilience of exploited populations. This complements the research strengths of Prof Gillanders research group at The University of Adelaide. Visiting the laboratories in Sète will thus provide a further opportunity to foster international collaboration and exchange research skills and expertise in fish and fisheries research.
Funding opportunities for travel are limited for early career researchers and the International Travel Bursary will provide necessary financial support to undertake the proposed objectives. I will maximise the funding and benefit of the bursary by combining conference attendance with a laboratory visit.
Objectives: 1. Attend the 5th International Otolith Symposium and present a research paper entitled “Broad and local scale drivers of growth of an estuarine fish species and implications for climate change." 2. Visit IFREMER’s (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) Mediterranean Fisheries Science Laboratories and present an overview of my research at the Laboratories’ weekly seminar series. 3. Develop collaborative linkages with a range of researchers at the Symposium and IFREMER. Read moreRead less
