. Our goal is to understand how long term exposure to climate change will affect oysters in an effort to climate-proof the Australian oyster industry. Oyster farming is worth more than $1 billion a year in retail sales and employs thousands of Australians. The future of this industry is threatened by climate change, particularly its impact on the reproduction and development of oysters. Our study will identify how oysters respond to chronic multigenerational exposure to ocean acidification and temperature, & identify physiological mechanisms and genes associated with climate change adaptation. This work will maintain Australia's position at the forefront of climate change research on marine ecosystems.Read moreRead less

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in the ageing population. This research project aims to identify and characterise new genes involved in the copper regulation of the Alzheimer's disease gene. This may lead to the development of novel therapeutic targets and clinical intervention strategies as well as early diagnostic procedures in preventative healthcare for the treatment of AD. The benefits would affect the international community as a whole, potentially minimising the socio-economic costs arising from the predicted world-wide increase in AD in the ageing population.Read moreRead less

This research will address key elements of the National research priority goals, including Priority 2 & Priority 3 Promoting an innovation culture and economy. This research will make a significant contribution to educators' understanding of ways of increasing Aboriginal students' educational success rates. It will enhance the schooling experiences of Aboriginal students and provide teachers with the tools to engage with Aboriginal students in a culturally appropriate and educationally efficacious manner. Improvement in Aboriginal students' educational qualifications will support welfare reform agendas, as higher educational attainment is associated with decreased welfare dependence, which is desired by Indigenous communities and leaders.Read moreRead less
